I'm just about to bite the bullet and treat myself to an xbox (the splinter cell/halo pack was the final bit of convincing I needed!).

My question is: are xbox games developed in both 4:3 and 16:9 formats or will the image be stretched when I change the setting on my TV to get the image to fill the screen.

I definately don't want to be playing in a 4:3 window but I don't want to stretch the image either!

Can somebody please tell me how it all works...

    Thanks

Just bought my X-box and have it set up in 16:9 mode on my WS TV.

I've got 8 games, 4 of which are in true anamorphic WS...

    Fifa 2003
    Colin MaCrae 3
    Rocky
    Sega GT 2002

The rest which are in 4:3, I play in 4:3 mode just like I would with 4:3 DVDs.

Playing in a 4:3 window isn't that bad, stretching Halo to fit 16:9 would be sacrillegous!

I haven't tried the WS games in 4:3 mode so am not sure if two versions exist on the disk or you just get borders like you do with DVD films.

Also, all the games I have so far are in DD 5.1 or 4.1 sound. Some sound awesome like Halo and even rival DVDs, whilst Fifa 2003 shows Sky Sports just how a footy match should sound.

The number of 16:9 games is very disappointing. I've owned or rented:

    Oddworld
    Amped
    Halo
    JSRF
    Project Gotham Racing
    Jedi Knight 2 : Outcast

Of those only Amped had 16:9 support.

Thanks for the quick response - is it simple setting up the xbox in 16:9 mode - on screen menu or something?

I'm going to be hooking this up to an AVR200 surround set up and the RGB input on my TV - what's the best cable combo to go for?

    Thanks!

Meh, when I play Halo on my widescreen I set it to stretch because in all honestly I can't tell the difference. Neither can I tell the difference when I stretch 4:3 DVDs or normal TV. However I can tell on my mates Widescreen TV when it does the stretching.

My TV has a panoramic mode which stretches out the picture proportinally whilst clipping about 2cm off the top and bottom - is this a critical bit of the image whilst playing Halo - eg is there a health meter or something on the screen? (same question goes for Morrowind - I game I just HAVE to buy!!!)

Wilbur, you need an advanced AV scart lead. MS do one but I think the Joytech one is supposed to be cheaper and just as good. This will replace the lead you get with the box and terminate in a Scart socket and an Optical audio socket. You then need a scart lead to your TV and an optical cable to your amp to get 5.1.

Setting up audio/video is fairly easy on the xbox menus.

I think you may have yours set to 'smart mode' where it stretches from the sides and cops a little from th eto pan bottom.

Either way, I can't understand why people don't just use normal, undistorted, un-cropped 4:3 mode in games and DVDs.

More so for games as there is important on screen displays that you can't afford to have cropped!

It's the best for that format as much as 16:9 mode is for 16:9 material.

Thanks for all of your responses. As soon as I get out of work I'm heading to the shops - any additions you would suggest to the following:

    Halo
    Splinter Cell
    Silent Hill 2
    Morrowind
    Medal of Honour

    Thanks

My tv is set to widescreen, and it doesn't crop off the top and bottom since you can still see the edge of the picture. There are other modes that do crop the picture like that.

I watch stuff stretched since I can't tell the diffence so I might as well make use of the large screen area.

Don't think MOH is up to much on the X Box, PC version is MUCH better.

    Rocky
    Timesplitters 2
    Colin Mcrae Rally 3
    Project Gotham Racing
    Fifa 2003
    Unreal Championship
