Microsoft has revealed that it intends to make the Xbox 360 much harder to hack than the current Xbox.

Apparently security systems will be built directly into the 360’s hardware rather than in its operating system. To make this possible Microsoft’s engineers have gone for a custom hardware design that lets them build in the security systems ‘from the ground up’.

Microsoft isn’t going so far as to claim that the 360 will be completely unhackable, but it does believe it will be a much tougher nut to crack, and that even if hackers manage to defeat the security on one 360 machine, the hack may not work on another machine.

The announcement comes in response to the cottage industry that’s grown up around modifying the current Xbox consoles to give them media centre capabilities or play imported games.
