I have been trying for a while now to find out the answer to this question with no luck. Can the Xbox 360 camera still be used to map faces into games even if you dont have xbox live? I read that this is possible somewhere on these forums but nobody had backed up that claim so I want to find out for definite!

I wouldn't have thought so , seeing as its live based , ie for people to see your face in game online.

I don't think the post implies that the OP actually has the camera, but for what it's worth, some did get put out on shelves in the States earlier in the week and people have have been snapping them up like crazy. They're also going for a pretty penny on eBay.

If the software comes on the game disc to map your face then I don't see why not - but it could be (and maybe likely to be?) a d/loadable extra so that you can map your face once and save it then various games can then grab that face model if they let you use your own face in their game.

I doubt photo mapping would be as good as a decent create-a-character.

As an example look at Saint's Row (limited version in the demo). Armed with a front and side photo of yourself you'll be able to create a good likeness, much better than a flat polygon textured with a photo.
