X-box live newbie advice

i know u must have seen this asked a thousand times.....but i havent!!
Just wondering what is required to get myslef setup on xbox live.
i know about the packages you can buy from amazon with headphones etc....but what kind of cables do u need.
At the mo i have telewest broadband for the pc. so if i wanted xbox live would i have to run a cable from my modem downstairs to my xbox toplay online gaming??
or will i be able to do it a less messy way??
sorry for sounding thick but i do not have a clue.

You need a Cat 5 ethernet cable, a credit card, and/or a voucher you get with the xbox live pack and you're away!

You plug the ethernet cable into the back of the xbox, and into your modem's ethernet port on the back.

Make sure when you switch between xbox live and pc you have your modem plug pulled out the back of the modem and the pc switched off.

If you dont mate you're buggered, as the pc will need to reset and renew your ip address, which blueyonder couldn't do for me! You'll have to do a system restore otherwise, so make sure you have the modem plug out, and the pc off when you switch cables mate!!!!!!

I learnt the hard way, I hope you don't have too
