    Hi guys,

Does anyone use there x-box for playing DVD's ?

I may use the X-box to save on buying a new DVD for the projector (when i decide what to buy).

    Would anyone advise against this?

I'm not sure this will help but I use a chipped UK Xbox running DVDx2 software with progressive scan patch in NTSC vid mode thru component video cables into my Panny AE100 and the image is stunning. It's really hard to tell the difference between this set up and using my HCPC.

The Xbox uses the same video decoding codecs as PowerDVD, if I remmember correctly.

I would strongly recommend you don't rely on your X-box for playing DVDs as the PQ is poor - lots of pixellation/blocking, poor contrast level, and that's vs my old 'budget' Tosh SD100E.

It's a stonking console but can't cut the mustard with DVDs, get yourself a Tosh 330 instead if DVD playback matters but funds are limited.

I totally agree! It's better than PS2 but it's a long step back from my harman/kardon dvd-25! DVD players better than the Xbox are cheap... :smashin:

I've used my XBox for this in progressive mode, but it really isn't worth it - the player software doesn't make a very good job of the de-interlacing and leaves you with a rather nasty looking image imho. Now if someone could release a homebrew DVD player for the XBox with proper 2:2 and 3:2 pulldown, then I'd be happy :)

Hold your horses there Malcolm. If you have a chipped Xbox, you should seriously check out the DVD-x2 software DVD player for it and get the progressive scan patch for it. Switch your vid mode on your Xbox to ntsc using the vid mode select app and then use component video cables to your Panny. You won't be dissappointed with the picture. It looks awesome.

Edit: I just bought the Compacks 5000 dvd player with progressive scan output on Pal and my Xbox looks a hell of a lot better. Better colours, much higher resolution.
Don't think I'll be looking around for a new DVD player for a while now.
