Would you replace your big speakers with little speakers?

I know the laws of physics dictate a bigger driver will sound better than tiny sats and a little 6" subwoofer.

But say if a new driver technology was developed so little speakers the size of a sugar cube could reproduce the exact same sound quality of say M&K 150, Kef Reference, B&W Nautilus etc (and the same technology is used for a subwoofer 10 cm x 10 cm) but rivals a Velodyne HGS-18 or better- would you do it?

Or do you like big boxes? :D

I was discussing this with someone last week.

If you could make a plasma exciter (don't go there...!) that cluld make the air move enough, it would be possible. It would require indcuing huge fields in the air and that might be dangerous though.

It's possible, dunno what it would like.

There is no way I would replace my big boxes with small speakers as I like the way they become the centre piece of the front room, even though the other half would be happier if I did. You can also show off when your mates come round and compare speaker sizes, as mine are always bigger than theirs  :D

Is this another opportunity for me to repeat my opinion that we'd be better off abandoning loudspeakers completely and using headphones and binaural recordings instead?

Oh, it isn't? Oh. Sorry. :)

i would jump at the chance, in fact i will be selling my m&k setup in a few months for a more discreet option -triad/artcoustic and the like in ceiling/on wall options. if they were 'ickle baby sized things and sounded as good, well, i for one would buy them! when is the release date of your new line of speakers then?:D

Don't know about a 10x10cm sub, but I've seen someones idea for a liquid driver subwoofer. And there are a couple of tubewoofers where the surround of piston is made a super elastomer which can take massive extensions without failing. These are both smaller than an HGS 18, but how good they would sound is not a known quantity.

Retro, that's some crezzy sheet you talkin' boy! I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but screening any electronics in the vicinity, let alone CRT tubes, would be a friggin nightmare.

If they were the size of sugar cubes what would happen if you stood on them or sucked them into the hoover? Could be expensive!
