Thought id start a poll to find out if cover art and packaging is important to anyone else here.

What dvds have you seen in special packaging (e.g. foil cover, embossed, metal tin, card slipcase etc).

I'll start us off with a few:

The Fast and the Furious - R1 (Foil/metalic finish amaray cover)
    2 Fast 2 Furious - R1 (Foil/metalic finish amaray cover)
Day of The Dead special Edition - R1 (embossed fold out card)
The Hills Have Eyes - R2 (embossed card slipcase)
Near Dark - R1/2 (Metalic fold out card)
    Final Destination - R1 (Foil/metalic finish snapper)
    Final Destination 2 - R1 (Foil/metalic finish amaray cover)
All R1 & early R2 Superbits (embossed metallic card slipcase)
Spiderman R2 HMV (alternate art - cardboard slipcase)
Godzilla R1 (Foil/metalic finish amaray cover)
ReAnimator Millenium R1 (embossed cover - green double amaray)
Star Trek movies 1-4 so far R2 (part metalic card slipcase)
Star Trek TV R2 (plastic trekkie type boxes/borg cube)
Close Encounters R1 (embossed metallic fold out card)
Jaws R1 (metallic amaray cover - R2 has just the title metallic)
ET R2 (embossed with metallic title fold out card)

Theres loads ive missed so feel free to add em:hiya:

Well I can only buy Region 1 anyway. However the Region 2 Buffy/Angel boxsets are pretty bad, as they're easy to scratch the discs. I prefer the standard R1 digipack boxsets.

Also prefer the Futurama R1 boxsets as they're more compact (they use slim DVD cases) so saves space on my racking.

Don't like the R2 Star Trek packs, plastic cases that are bigger & deeper than normal DVD's. Athough I wouldn't buy ST, but if I did I would go for the digipack version (R1?)

I don't like the ST movie sets that are garish, I just prefer the boring amaray.

Don't like snappers. Normally I just get amaray.

The Total Recall Tin was a joke, again I prefer the amaray.

T2 Ultimate & Highlander Immortal Edition metal cases are OK, as they're similar in sized to Amaray.

Don't like the Battlestar Gallatica boxset either.

The LOTR giftsets with the bookends take way too much space up (I could chuck the outer packing away, but it'll be worthless)- so I went for the 4 discer only.

cheers nathan - i think alot of people will have differing opinions on this.
Its not obvious when looking at a website what sort of cover/packaging the dvd has (some even use the movie poster or copy art from another site irrestpective of region).
Its nice to get opinions on this (and gather together a list)

Quality, price and features are important to me. The cover art is a very minor consideration.

Actually I didn't. :) I make the descision to buy a film and then seek out the "best" version, considering those criteria.

yeh quality of the movie itself is irrelivant to this particular discussion - if you dont think you will like the film you wont buy it in ANY region surely (those who buy a film they dont like just because it has nice sound/vision are missing the point entirely - we surely want the films we enjoy with the best possible quality - no point enduring a film you dont enjoy!!)

**unless it is for your wife/girlfriend - in which case they know best and we do ANYTHING for them ;)

Didn't the Matrix R1 & R2 have the dreaded snapper case ? I think the R4 version is uncut AND has a proper case. SO surely most people should be answering #2

I'm a sucker for novelty packaging, and have the space to accommodate larger cases so I don't mind that.

However, I wouldn't usually trade-off DTS Soundtracks for packaging.

I've been known to buy two copies of the same disc (one with the great packaging and one with DTS Soundtracks), just so I can put the DTS Disc into the novelty packaging :D

Me too, I'm like a moth to a light when I see a sexy case/box set!

I think it goes back to the days when I collected laserdisc. Those glossy covers were amazing with gate fold sleeves & terrific art work. The box sets came at a premium price, but were beautfully produced.
Lets face it those days are gone, but every now and again we get treated to something special like the Jap R2 Dances with Wolves box set. Awsume!

Good one Lex - thats the kind of response id hoped for...

anyone else think of any specific packages not mentioned?

P.S. Matrix Reloaded wasnt that good a film so i will wait for the entire trilogy special edition - no doubt the packaging will be better too ;)

HMV seem to get a lot of exclusive edition covers. X-Men and Spider-Man spring to mind.

Sadly in later seasons Region1 Buffy/Angel in 4:3 ratio whilst Region2 in 16:9 -- you pays your money, you takes your choices.

16:9 Buffy is not OAR, JW planned it to be 4:3. I believe Angel is supposed to be 16:9.

Buffy looks better in 16:9 whether it was intended or not imho ;)

Also much prefer the region two packaging, I agree that they are not particularly practical, but they look great :smashin:

Ah ha, really? LOL. What, did his evil twin brother plan season four onwards? Nathan_Silly you are so funny sometimes.

I could say "JW planned season one through three to be 4:3 and seasons four through seven to be 16:9 -- which is why it is the way it is."

Do either of us know Joss Whedon*, or have actually spoken to him, or is he posting here? Nope! Sadly we don't know what he planned and have to reply on facts instead.

Fact: Region1 Buffy on DVD is 4:3, Region2 Buffy is 16:9 where available.

Question: is Region1 DVD Buffy 4:3 because "JW planned it to be" or because most American buyers of this DVD own 4:3 television sets?

*Creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Yeh the packaging to the re-release of TCM does look "different" but i think the R2 packaging looks better - i wish that they had bothered to remaster an anamorphic picture instead of rehashing the old already released version though
