My frustration over the task of identifying whether Game, Gamestation, Play, GU or DodgyDeals.co.uk have the best XBOX bundle have led me to Ebay.

I'm a reasonably experienced Ebayer, so I'm not asking "how do I use Ebay" or anything like that. Admittedly, most of the stuff I have bought from there has been CDs or DVDs, rather than big ticket stuff like this. I'm also aware of the various referrer scheme "scams" on Ebay and the general principle that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Would you consider buying a console from Ebay? If so, do you think it's better to go with private individuals selling their machine second hand or with the no-name retailers?

Are there any things to look out for with either type of seller?

Does buying a second hand machine cause problems in terms of Gamertags (can you wipe them and put your own on)? If it's under 12 months old, will the MS warranty be transferrable? Do you need to make sure you get the original receipts?

Or is Ebay best avoided completely? Without turning this into a flame war about various sellers and specific examples, what are your thoughts?

Personaly with the fail rate of 360s id be more likely to buy from Game or Gamestation who exchange failed 360s without any fuss.

I guess it comes down to how much money going through the Ebay route saves you, Prehaps you are better off spending a little more and having peace of mind.

Im in the market for a Xbox 360 also and reading about the fail rates of them i would now only buy a new one from a retailer. If the machines were totally reliable then it would be a different story.

Entirely possibly true. One of my questions is whether I can still do this buying 2nd hand from Ebay from someone with their Gamestation receipt.

If this is possible then it seems about as safe as buying brand new from Gamestation...

Personally no, i would never buy any large/expensive item from ebay ive heard and seen too many horror stories.

But with the 360 specifically, i would like to have the comfort of being able to walk into a store and have it replaced/ repaired etc

I bought a 360 off ebay and it broke pretty much right away but i had the guys receipt from game and just phoned up microsoft and they collected it the next day. Although you do have to get details off the buyer for example if they have registered it and if so all the details i.e. address etc as they do ask that.

Did you have any problems associated with it being a second hand machine, eg creating a gamertag, using Live, etc?

I bought mine off ebay with no problems at all last Feb. The console failed in Aug and I had it swapped out with no hassle from MS.

I really don't see why this is such a common opinion & why so many people criticise ebay, surely anything that makes trading across the world so easy is a good thing

I have bought many expensive items from ebay (including the laptop I am writing this on) & have had absolutely no problems, if you use common sense & buy from a reliable seller then everything will be fine.

However, like has been said, the 360 is probably best bought brand new for the peace of mind that a full 12 month warranty brings.

The only issue lies with the failure rate of the console, nothing you can do about this but the earlier ones are to be avoided. This has already been discussed above and I am just re-iterating the point.

Wouldn't do it myself, you can get great offers with discount codes or bundles from shops that are just to tempting now :)

Only other suggestion i would make if you were to buy from ebay is to buy from some one who is local to you, and will let you collect so you can see it working.

That way you know it'll work and you know where they live, better than having it posted from across the country!

Got mine on ebay as it was all sold out in the shops back then.

I got invited to the chaps house, he opened it in front of me, gave me the receipt, offered me a cup of tea etc

    No problems with mine
