Hi guys, please go easy as I'm looking to set up my first NAS so know very little about which is the right one for my needs. What I require is a NAS for back up from my mac's (using time machine) plus extra storage that can be accessed from anywhere. So idealy split the storage for back up and general use, is that possible? Would be good if I good increase the NAS storage using USB drives (have loads). This one seems to fit the bill but to be quite frank I have no idea? Budget is around £300 including 4-6tb disc space.

Any help adivce very much appreciated.

Well, I am on my second synology nas, good choice.

You need to decide if you want raid. My view is, that with raid you will reduce the amount of storage. And, "RAID isn't backup" I backup/copy to separate usb drives.
whatever you decide, the preparation of the hard drives will take a long time.
I have mine as two separate volumes, I think you need to choose custom for this, the default will be Synology Hybrid Drive, basically raid.

but there are plenty of guides, have a look through before doing anything.
