Would this be a good combination?

Didn't really know where to put this so this will do. Been given the green light to get a new receiver and some new speakers.

Currently I have a Yamaha a595a and the Eltax Stargate X1 sub/sat system.

I have around £600 to spend and am keen on the Mordaunt Short Premiere (Plus) speaker package as big boxes are a no-no

The amps I am considering are:
Sony STRDB790

Denon AVR1604

Denon AVR1804

The speakers are rated at 80w where as the amps are 75w for the 1604 and 90w for the 1804 and the Sony.

Would the larger amps damage the speakers seeing as they have a higher power output?

Are there any other differences between the 1604 & 1804 other than power output?

Would any of those amps be a good combination with the MS spaekers seeing as a demo in almost impossible?

I want mainly AV duties but the ability to outperform my Technics mini hifi for music which will be relegated to the conservatory.

Thanks

Ordered the MS premiere plus now so just need a new reciever.

Still can't decide on the amp.

Anyone know how much better the 1804 is than the 1604.

Sony winning every review going at the moment.

Then theres the Yammy 5640

Need to decide this week.

Anyone else - please help me decide.

The 1804 is worth the extra over the 1604.

It has a lot more authority and much more accurate sound steering.

Although for the same price you could look at the Marantz SR5400 or the Pioneer 812. The Sony Amp is nice, but it may be a bit too bright for the Mordaunt Shorts, the denons or the marantz will be a better match.

Thanks Kazman - what about a second hand 3802? Where things move on would that still be an improvement over the 1804?

The second hand 3802 will give an immense performance boost over the amps that you specified above. Loads more power and refinement. This amp was about £800 when it first came out! I've got one and it's ace, not bad in stereo either :)

Yeah, the 3802 would have been a good buy. The 1804 isnt a bad amp though, if anything, the 3802 might have been overkill with the mordaunt short premiere package.

I personally think that with your speakers, you will get a better balance with an 1804 or a Marantz SR4400/5400

There's no such thing as overkill as far as processing and amplification goes (unless you're being ridiculous). If you can get a better amp for the same money, go for it!
