Question Would I notice a difference?! (New AVR)

Hi everyone,

This may be a daft question for you... I currently have a Monitor Audio speaker setup, two floor standers, centre, sub and two rears.

I use them for Cinema and Hifi and run all from a Harmon Karden AVR171. I used to have cheaper speakers but upgraded a while ago.

If I get a new AVR, would I notice a big difference for cinema and hifi? If so, what would you recommend for max of £1000.

Thanks in advance!

Leo.

I would think you would get an improvement with a Denon X4300, which in effect is several tiers above the HK. It's well under your budget, esprcially if you move quickly. The X6300 has mono bloc amps driving the left and right channels which is better for music, slightly above budget. There have been problems with the 6300 which reportedly have now been fixed by Denon. It's stereo performance is really excellent as it is on my 6200.

A difficult question to be sure. I have had a number of receivers over the years including Yamaha (3 models) Sony (1 model) Pioneer (2 models) and an Onkyo. To be honest I did notice differences in performance between them and by that I do mean the channel separation and detail. There is no doubt in my mind that the higher priced ones perform better but from my experience speakers also matter. I changed from an Yamaha RX-A3050 last week as I accepted Dolby Atmos wasn't an option for me. I had no intention of changing the receiver until I heard what a Primare SPA 23 setup sounded like. The Yamaha was wonderful but the detail and separation from the Primare Amp was apparent from the first time I played a Blu Ray. I have just put the Yamaha on a well known auction site starting with E... if you wanted to take a look.

A little over budget and limited to 1 but there is a used Denon X7200WA for sale at the Movie Rooms for £1,100:

It is one hell of a receiver for the money and definitely worth a look IMO. Just been confirmed to be getting a Dolby Vision / HLG update sometime early next year too so fairly future proof.

Amp tech has moved on quite a bit. The biggest difference to your existing system will be calibration and room correction, which all the newer D&M amps recommend above will do much better than your old HK amp.
Sound formats are the other thing, though arguably to use things like Atmos you will need more speakers, though it is worthwhile and gives you expansion for later!
