Hi guys. Just about to chase in the wiring for my new 5.1 setup.

Of course while doing this I may take the opportunity to provide the capability for 7.1 should I eventually go this route but my question is.....would I benefit from a 7.1 setup given my room limitations?

    (See attached piccie)

I'm intending my rears to be in position "A" but is it worth wiring in terminals in position "B" as well?

The distance between A and B is only about a metre so my gut feeling is that it may not be worth it.

There is no way that I'll be able to move the big sofa forward so cannot get my rears behind the listening position. Placing them at picture-rail position above the listening position isn't really going to happen either.

Should i just stick with 5.1????

I wouldn't bother, you need the rears behind you for an improvement by 7.1, even then unless the source material is mixed specifically for it it can still leave you a bit non-plused.

I'd go for it myself, if the distance is a meter or so then you will still get some of the effect of a rear pair especially if you slightly angle the rears to the wall and let then bounce off it, that may help them to sound slightly more like they are behind you.

It's not going to really add any extra cost to have the wall chased and the extra cable run in so why not.

No idea which way to go to be honest. I'm not going to wire in unless it's a definite option for the future.

Otherwise wife will never be happy that there's these two odd plates up in the wall that aren't being used.

If they were mid-wall I could hang a couple of pictures over them....but they are not.

I have a Mryad mdp500g6 with Celstion C series all round, rotel poweramps, biamping the fronts and single the side and rears, unless the source speceifiaclly is mixed 6.1 we watch 5.1 because the matrixed sound muffles the centre, our rears are a metre behind the lsitening position. I'm glad I didn't pay much for the pair of speakers at the rear because they are not used much.

Just discussed with the wife about mounting a pair of speakers under the picture rail above the listening position.......

......I'll be sticking with 5.1 then
