Would a 42" LCD be too big (see photo)

Below is a photo of my current lounge LCD, which is a 32" Toshiba.
I would like to buy a 42" (probably Philips 42PFL9664, if budget will allow).
The photo was taken from my usual viewing position, which is approx 8 feet from the screen.
Do you think a 42" would be overkill?
My next smallest option is a 40" Sony (Z5500).
I don't think a 37" would give me enough of a difference over the current 32-incher.
I don't want to wall mount over the fireplace, it'll be too high.
My wife won't allow me to bin the fireplace either.

Philips is good with SD, so 42" at 8 feet will not be an overkill imo, maybe for some poor SD sources, it might look poor.

No, I don't like that practice.
Unnaturally high viewing position.
If I were to wall mount, I would mount at eye level.
Which would mean binning the fireplace, which the wife won't allow.

i think that you could definately get away with a 42 inch in the corner where you have your 32 incher.

the thing is with the philips 9 series range the profile is very slim and even though its 42 inches they designed it to take the place of a 37 inch tv.

the impact of this tv isn't as big as your typical 42 lcd or plasma. i think you will be fine good luck on what ever you decide.

Go for it! I've just brought a 42" Toshiba which is in my lounge corner that I view from about the same distance, and it looks spot on!
