Hi,

I recently purchased a Monitor Audio Bronze 6 surround set, driven by a Denon X4700H with a couple of Atmos speakers. The one thing I'd like to do is get a specialist sub, specifically the P12-300SB-PR.

Is this a decent upgrade? It will be going in the living room (dimensions 4.9mx3.7m with a standard height ceiling). My other half is open to the idea (she was even talking about the monolith, but I think it would just be too much for our living room), but she's asked me to gather a few opinions before buying.

Would there be any use for the w10 if we had the BK sub? we wouldn't mind having a 2 sub set up if it could work with the BK sub. Our main use is movies/tv series, but with quite a bit of gaming and some music thrown in.

Thanks!

The basic sealed P12 was a step up from the W10 already mentioned in AVF review of Bronze 5.1 system. So the PR is surely even better choice, although i would personally buy Monolith if wife even green lights it. Of course you then have to think about is it possible to have two of them in future. If not then the P12-PR would make more sense. But generally speaking BK Monolith or Monolith Plus won´t be too much in your 18sqm room. We have members with lot smaller rooms with Monos. You bought the larger Bronze system so one could ask why would you then go small with woofers.

Another alternative would be SVS PB1000 Pro at 575£ (with discount), it would be little bit more compact than Monolith and offer better performance as both BK models. Also phone app control, 5year warranty. If there is minus then it could be the black ash finish. You can show the youtube vid for wife so she get`s better idea of the size/looks.

Here is fellow AVF members video of BK Mono FF. Notice that DF and FF driver orientation has different cabinet dimensions. The taller low depth DF model may work better in your lounge.

Thank you for that! You've given me a couple of options to think about there. I had thought the SVS pro to be pretty much equivalent to the BK electronics, so that's tempting as well.

Simple answer to your question is yes!

I had the previous Monitor Audio Bronze 5 (5th Gen) 5.1 speaker set inc W10 sub. I very quickly upgraded the W10 to the BK P12-300SB-PR. The BK is a totally different beast to the W10 and is absolutely worth the money. Incidentally my room is a very similar size to yours. (4.57m x 3m)

Ironically. I've since sold the P12 and now have 2x SVS SB2000 Pro's. I use my system for both music & movies - 50/50 split. I wanted to go dual subs and couldn't get the OH to agree to a second P12. The SB2000's (being sealed) are a little smaller and 2 of those got her approval. To this day I'm not sure I understand her logic here, but I don't care! My dual SB2000's offer enough "punch" for me!

I also agree with @Gasp3621 comments. Whichever sub you choose, If you can, consider going dual subs long term.

Oh... Triple check the dimensions on the BK Mono/Mono+. They are huge. and I'd have struggled to both fit and/or get OH approval for either!

+1

I'd agree that the upgrade should be significant. You may find you don't need a second sub.

I think all the SVS subs mentioned have DSP and a good app. The BKs don't. The DSP should do a good job of matching the sub to your room and having a crack at taming room modes, so I think it's worth considering. As a generalisation sealed subs tend to sound tighter than ported.

You have probably already seen this as mentioned by @Gasp3621

Thank you all for the replies! I've decided that the SVS PB 1000 pro will be the best deal. I need to have a hunt around for the discount mentioned (I might put that saved money towards the feet that they sell separately). Responses in here really did help me convince her that it was worthwhile!

@Tom @ Cinehome @AmericanAudio and @AV Online all stock the SVS range, so might be worth checking with these guys too.

I'm sure you'll love the PB1000 Pro - it's a phenomenal sub. Tbf though, I don't think any of the SVS range is bad!

That is spot on. I'd like to buy this as soon as possible, but saving a few quid always helps, so I'll message the guys you mentioned a little later to see if there are any deals.

Thank you, all!

@AmericanAudio was kind enough to offer me a deal, and the PB1000 pro arrived this morning. It was really good service, thanks :)

I've been at work all day, so I've had limited time to play around with it, but I've run it through Audyssey and it sounds amazing when watching the Atmos version of Resident Evil Apocalypse (chosen for its explosions and gunfire more than anything else).

I'm looking forward to testing it out a bit more, as my first 'proper' sub. I need to find a few things to really try it out with over the next few weeks, but I'm super happy so far.

Pleased you like your new "proper sub" It'll sound even nicer once it's run in a bit.

Kudos to @AmericanAudio for their super quick delivery!
