This MUST be a book you have personally read and had a fondness for but was appalled by the movie.

For me it's a clear winner, Queen Of The Damned

When I watched Interview With The Vampire I liked the film so I got the book version and loved that even more, I then got the following books in the series namely "The Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of The Damned". QOTD was absolutely riveting, I could not put it down so when I heard a movie version was coming out I was excited.

The movie was utter utter crud, almost nothing from the book was faithfully done, it was like a brand new piece of work. The term "based on" is IMO fraudulent, Anne Rice should have sued

Not keen on any of the Tom Clancy screen adaptations, save for the sublime 'Hunt for Red October'.

Captin Corelli's Mandolin most of the story is missing, :( Oh Baby. You have no Idea why some of the characters do what they do and there is non of the back story at all. Such a dissapointing film. When the book is one of the best I have ever read.

Removal of Harry Potter, as the rules dictate that I do not have a fondness for Harry Potter books, therefore the film translation may have in actual reality been very good, as it faithfully translated the awfulness of Harry Potter into the visual world.

    :p

    My apologies Confuscious

So, Sinzer, you have a fondness for the Potter books which you also state (not opine, I note) to be the WORST books ever.

    How odd.

William Diehl's Primal Fear. The film just killed it for me. Turned it off half way through. Also Stephen King's IT. Pap. Turned that off too.

Manhunter - could have been a better adaptation of red dragon, but did not quite pull it off.

The Lost World bears no resemblence to the fantasic book, oh baby. Crichton would turn in his grave if he was dead.

Lost World was neither a good book or film - which is worse I can't tell. Film suffered from Annoying-Kiditis, book suffered from being duller than Jurassic Park, which to my horror I read in less time than it would take to see the film.

As to worse Book-To-Screen, well Clear and Present Danger was so awful I can't watch it - if you're wondering why Sum of All Fears is such a screwed up movie (young Jack Ryan and all), you have to blame the fact that the book is a direct sequel, and half of the plot is lifted from sub-plots in CPD which got cut out of the movie version.

    Here's one for you...

Royal Flash was a god-awful attempt to bring George Macdonald Frasiers sublime Flashman series of books to the screen.

Roddy McDowell as Flashman ?! The mans a wimp, whereas Flashman was 6ft 2" and 14 stone plus.

Unfortunately, virtually impossible to bring the series to the screen due to the narrative style of the books, but they still tried - Frasier was involved with the screenplay - and failed. Dismally.

Oh Oh Oh - it's got to be "Mansfield Park" - I posted about this a couple of weeks ago.

American director brought bared tits into Jane Austen plus shoved anti-slavery theme right up the ar** (metaphorically speaking) of anyone conned into buying it.

Yep...I'd say Hannibal too. Must have missed out about 150 pages worth of story

I thought I'd fallen asleep during the film and woke up towards the end :D

Flashman, wasn't that Malcom McDowell rather than Roddy.

Back to crap adaptations, try Clan Of The Cave Bear, V I Washarski, The Keep, Congo and loads more I can't think of at the moment.

I thought Jurassic Park the book wasnt bad, and at least explained the background of the characters well. The film omitted all of that and was rather cruddy..

How about the animated version of "The Lord of the Rings". That was an insult to Tolkien!

    "Girl Interrupted" was not great.

And there have been plenty of dubious Shakespeare adaptations (far too many to list) ;)
