Worse cars you've ever owned.

This thread has helped me decide what I'm going to do for the wife's next car.
I was considering a used car for the first time in years.
Sod the risk associated with that, I'm going to stick with a brand new lease motor.:)

I feel l left out that we never had a Marina now!

My Dad never had a Marina but didn't escape the BL effect entirely as he bought an Austin Maxi instead. Aside from from being one of the most unfortunate looking cars ever made, it needed a new gearbox after 60,000 miles and began to dissolve after a few years.

Incredibly, he was considering a Montego estate to replace it but the fact that the four month old demonstrator was already rusting drove him to buy a Volvo 240 instead which remained in the family for ten years and 194,000 miles and is, I suspect, the only car my Mother ever truly loved.

My only duffer was a 2002 Ford Mondeo Zetec TDCi130.

A very nice car per se, but the example I bought (in a bit of a panic as I thought my circumstances would be changing even though they didn't!) was the classic 'Friday afternoon' car. I kept it 8 months and in that time it cost me £1,300 in repairs and I lost a further £1,000 when I finally cut my losses and sold it.

It hasn't put me off Fords, though, as I owned a Ford Scorpio before it which I was unable to GIVE away after buying the Mondeo. The Scorpio ended up sat outside the house for my 8 months of Mondeo ownership, then sailed through its MOT and gave another 2 years sterling service!

Glad to help.

May I point you in the direction of the beautiful Scirocco GT?

Worst car for me would be the Austin Maxi i had back in the 90's, closely followed by the Allegro.
The Allegro came to a wonderful death when the startermotor caught the flywheel some how and smashed the whole bell housing off.
The worst car ive ever known must be my dads sunbeam alpine.

Jeep Cherokee. Whoever invented that hated the environment. I could see the petrol needle moving.

agreed ! i had a big thirsty petrol one too. and yeah, on the motor way you could see the needle reducing as is slurped back the fuel quicker than a rocket heading for the moon. by far my worse car ever purely based on the terrible MPG

Skoda Fabia vRS - Usual constant VAG unreliability
Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDi Ambiente - Usual constant VAG unreliability
Austin Maestro - Just sad (1st car for cheap insurance)
VW Corrado 1.8 16V - Beautiful, but usual constant VAG unreliability

I had a Grand Cherokee which averaged 18.4mpg in the 3,200 miles that I owned it for. I could live with that but mine was dreadfully unreliable and obviously had been so earlier in it's life too judging by some of the bodged repairs that we uncovered.

I rather liked the car though and would have had another if it were a more reliable example

Agree about the grand cherokee, bought one for 7k had it for 2 months spent 5k on it (rear diff failure, halfshafts, crank position sensor fault) traded it on for 4k after finding various other problems.

Was shafted by worthless warranty company who promised everything until it came to paying out then left me with the car on a ramp with no real axle and demanded an assessor see the damage (first mention of this) and said it could take 3wks to get one down to see it, mechanic threatened to drag it into the rd with no axle rather than use up his ramp for that long so credit card out!

All parts were extorsionate, no mechanic would touch it and mpg was terrible, still hurts thinking about it

As for Fabia VRS i have had mine 4yrs 80k and been pretty reliable

Apart from the obvious MK2 escorts and Old Renault 5 (bought out of desperation when i kicked the girlfriend out and she took her car), the worst of recent years is a bit of a double edged sword as i really liked the car too.
It was a 2005 Saab 9-3 1.9TID 150bhp (chipped to 170bhp).
I liked it because it looked nice, handled well, done 54mpg (after chipping), was quick, had all the toys, BUT...

The EGR valve broke TWICE,
The swirl actuator broke,
The alternator broke TWICE,
The coilspring snapped,
The top suspension bush disintegrated,
The air ciculation button on the dash broke,
The rev counter would drop below 1,500rpm (even with engine switched off).
Countless amount of trouble with onboard SID (Saab information display), easily rectified though by undoing the battery for a half hour.

This was all in about 70,000 miles and 4 years of ownership.
It was the ONLY car that i couldnt trust and took out AA cover on.

In 1986 I bought a 72 Avenger 1500 auto. Metallic blue with a lovely white vinyl roof,:D Cost me £40(needs must) My 2000E had gone round a banger track.

When it rained had over an inch of water in both foot wells, a whole tube of mastik sorted that.
When it did rain whilst driving wipers would work for a few mins then the fuse for them would pop out of its cracked holder so had to stop and push it back in.

Had this during the cold January 87 spell (anyone) and during this the gear linkage decided to fall apart, did a temp repair as it wasn't worth fixing correctly so obviously this often came back to haunt me!:(

Its reversing light was an old front flood hooked up to a toggle switch, this was handy when cars behind hadn't dipped their lights.

Managed to get it through two MOTs and sold it to a visiting American serviceman for £200 (they love autos):smashin: and I hated that car.

Don't like the Megane I have now much either though.

I had a Talbot solara, most redeeming feature was it's uncanny ability to drive to the left ALL the time, right up till the front left axel snapped and the wheel came loose!! Lucky it was unable to go over 30 mph without a very big downhill!! So glad when I got shot of it and got a Mark 1 festa

i never had mine long enough to have any problems with ! i think it lasted two months (i had the grand too) and i just pottered about london in it mostly.

shame though as they're so cumfy and lovely to drive. 5 years on my wallet is yet to recover ! :D

Worst
Mitsubishi Galant - what a heap of s..t:rolleyes: - I ended up selling it for next to nothing and the bloke had to have it towed away, he phoned me a few weeks later and he still couldn't get the thing started!!:rotfl:

Ford Escort circa 1986 whichever mk that was, what a rust bucket :rotfl: ran ok though

Ford Capri 1.6L - Y reg thing, put anything heavy in the boot and the car used to lose control on a bend lol

Mini Metro - another heap of s..t:rotfl:

Best
My VW Passats and Polo which I had for 11 years from new and only cost me £500 in repairs in all that time, never let me down, ended up putting it for scrappage deal at the time, and got a Skoda Octavia.

My latest car is a Honda Civic SI - only had for 5 months now but I love it:devil:
