Just spent this afternoon stripping an old staircase which had a layer of paint and a layer of dark wood stain. Stripped it back to the bare timber now and sanded it all off. Looks pretty decent as is except that the newel post, banisters and the actual staircase itself are all slightly different colours as they're different types of timber.

I want to retain the 'bare' timber looks as much as possible but having never 'stained' timber before I was just wondering if anyone else has attempted this? Ultimately I want all the timbers to look the same 'colour' but want to retain a light oak / bare timber look.

Any ideas what's the best way to go. Would a simple light oak wood stain have the desired results?

Thanks :)
