I sold my BluRay player a month or so ago and since then have been using the PS4 to watch films. Last night I tried to watch WARRIOR and even though the disc appeared to be completely clean and unscratched it would not recognise the disc! I had to connect my old school PS3 which played it with no problems. I tried playing another BluRay on the PS4, first one to hand was THE DARK NIGHT which it played. Any ideas what the problem might be?

    Firmware update required.
If already up-to-date then you'll have to wait until Sony release a new update that fixes the problem for that disc.

As the disc plays on PS3 & other discs play on PS4, then there's no problem with disc or hardware.
You'll have to wait for Sony to fix it in a future PS4 firmware.

Can happen with any Blu-ray player.

Google 'Avatar Blu-ray won't play' or 'Avengers 3D won't play' & you'll see plenty of players from plenty of different brands having problems playing particular discs occasionally. Lots of other discs I could mention as well.

You just have to be patient or play it on another player.

This is the first time I've ever encountered a problem since BluRay first appeared. Having owned PS3, Denon 3800BD and Cambridge Audio 752BD.

    There's always a first time ;)
Depends on the types of titles you're buying- more often than not, recent Fox titles have been causing issues for various BD players. Eg Life of Pi, X-Men days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Personally I've only had 2 discs (HP Goblet of Fire & Hellboy 2) that have caused me problems- both on the PS3. Both discs work fine on the PS3 now.

Funnily enough; DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was the other title received from Love Film which didn't play last night.

I recently bought both Dawn & Rise of the planet of the apes on bluray - both play fine on my ps4. Don't understand how it can be firmware related if a disk plays for one person but not another (when both are using up to date firmware)

Lovefilm rental discs aren't neccessarily the same as retail discs. eg all of Liongates rental discs are barebones with no extras & only lossy audio. Their retail discs conversely have extras & HD audio. I suspect there may be a slight difference for Dawn as it plays for you but not alcarmichael.

Or it could be something simple, & the lovefilm disc had big chocolate fingerprints & scratches all over the disc ;)

I posted a similar thread on the Playstation community forum and received a reply stating it could be the LoveFilm disc; apparently they're coated in a protective film to help prevent scratches which caused the poster in my thread many problems. I guess it's possible the PS4 may struggle with this protective layer where as the PS3 isn't bothered by it?
