Anyone have experience of converting files between mp3/wma formats, and the effect it has on quality.

Most stuff on my PC is in WMA, but I'm looking to buy a portable player at the moment, yet the one I want only handles MP3s. It has software that converts WMA to MP3, but am thinking this could degrade quality...

    Anyone have experience?

It will degrade quality, imho significantly as each uses different compression algorithms. Whether or not it's ok for you is up to your ears ;) To convert them before you buy the portable check out dBpowerAMP Music converter Personally, I'd look for a portable that supports WMA too (unless of course you're looking at an iPod!)

    :)

Yeah, I was worried that'd be the case.

Currently looking at the I-river ifp-390t and the I-audio CW300. The latter is supposed to have the absolute best audio quality for an mp3 player (s/n ratio 95db), but only supports MP3. The I-audio one is supposed to still sound great (but not as good), but also supports WMA

Might be looking at re-ripping my audio CDs as MP3s :)

Cheers for the comments. Anyone else?

If you do decide to go the "re-rip" route and you like the convenience of WMP take a look at my post in this thread ;)
