Wireless Wakeup

I pretty sure this isn't possible, but I'll ask any way. Can you wake up a Media Center PC that is in standby over a wireless adsl modem?

No, I believe it's not. Wireless wakeup (I believe) is considered a "security risk".

If the media center is connected to the ADSL via wireless itself then no, unfortunately, devices allow themselves to be woken via a wired network interface but not a wireless one.

It is connected to an ADSL wireless modem, but i'm actually using the wired ethernet connection at the moment, does this make a difference?

Yes it can then - as it's not wireless. You need to confiugre wake up on Lan - which requires a special packet to be sent/forwarded to your system. Google for more info.

Not sure where this thread started, but you can definitely wake up a machine running MCE via a wireless connection. I do this already using a Wifi enabled PDA (using "magic packets"). A little inelegant and really needs to be integrated into the likes of Netremote and Niveus sooner rather than later.

That said the MCE machine is connected to the wireless router via a network cable - so it's not wireless at both ends.

This is the important thing, the machine being woken needs to be physically connected to the network by a cable. The machine waking the other can be connected by any method.

On the machine to be woken you need to set Wake-On-Lan (WOL) to be enabled, then you need to find out the MAC address of this machine.

Then, all you need to do to wake it is to send a "magic packet" to the destination mac address. You can find the tools to do this here:
http://gsd.di.uminho.pt/jpo/software/wakeonlan/mini-howto/wol-mini-howto-3.html

If you want to do this from the internet then it's a little more tricky. You will need to set port-forwarding on your DSL router to forward packets on UDP ports 9, 2304 and 5555 to the machine to be woken. The you simply use one of the utilities above and specify the destination address as that of your internet IP on the DSL router...

You might also want to check out this web page, it's a little automated tool to wake up remote computers over the internet:
http://www.dslreports.com/wakeup

Hope this helps a little
