Wireless router as adapter?

Hi,

I have a spare Netgear DG834 wireless router/modem and wondered if I could configure it as a simple wireless adaptor?

The idea would be to connect my TV via ethernet to this router which would then in turn connect to my existing wireless network. The reason for this is that my exisiting wireless router/modem (ADSL connected) is too far away from the TV to connect directly via ethernet.

I thought if I disable DHCP on the spare router and make sure it's IP address is the similar to my exisiting network that it might work?

Any help appreciated.

Do you mean configure as access point so that it extends your current wireless network?

thanks for the reply,

I don't need to connect other wireless devices to the spare router, only the TV via ethernet. It would just be acting like a wireless adapter solely for my TV. ie. I'm not trying to extend the range of my existing wireless network.

I think it's possible using the WDS config. on the Netgear but not sure how, and the other router isn't a Netgear so might not be possible?

Cheers.

No, essentially he wants to use it make the TV wireless - just as you would if you plugged a USB wifi adapter into a laptop or PC that doesn't have wifi built in.

Thanks for that, seems easy. No need for WDS on either router?

You may want to check this out. Wireless Network - Hardware Configuration Modes

Mode 3 client looks to be more suitable...as opposed to mode 4. It seems to be exactly what you were asking for. I only configured it once as a repeater but that would mean bandwidth / 2. In client mode you should retain full bandwidth.

What you are trying to do is reconfigure your router into what is known as Wireless Bridge (NOT a Wireless Access Point - that it either way round - wired to wireless.)

Your idea about switching off DHCP and renumbering the box is sound. That will allow it to take part in you Network without screwing it up.

The answer to your question however is that some can do what you wish and some can't. I suggest you download a manual from the Netgear site and look for 'Bridge Mode' or similar. (Unless someone comes on with certain knowledge that that model can do it and how to.)

As you say, there is no need for WDS.

in order for it to work as a wireless ethernet bridge you need it to support "client mode"

im not sure which version/firmware you have, Im sure if you check you may find it somewhere in the GUI of the later firmware/versions under advanced wireless settings, if it is supported

failing that just buy a used gaming adapter off ebay for £15, its the same thing - a wireless ethernet bridge with one port

looks like manufacturers have cottoned onto a lot of consumer electronics needs to be on the network these days and doing wireless bridges for them

Thanks for the info guys.

I read about Client mode and it seems to describe my situation exactly as you say.

I'll have a go setting that up first, I think I'm lucky as the DG834 has that ability, but I guess there are other firmwares if required.

Cheers

Iain.
