Have you got a correct IP adress and DNS server configured on your laptop? From a command prompt Try pinging news.bbc.co.uk to check you can resolve the name to prove DNS. If that fails try pinging 212.58.226.33 which is the IP for news.bbc.co.uk. Failing all that type ipconfig /all and paste the results.

There could be whole host of reasons why you can't browse the web but we have to start trouble shooting somewhere.

Has your router got WEP or WPA security switched on? If so did you enter the WEP or WPA ID number of your router?

If you have not got WEP or WPA switched on that means ANYONE can access your router.

What make/model is your router?
