What the best wireless adapter to get?



i know that loads of them are crap and turn off and on sumtimes.

you reccomend any gd ones?



i do loads of downloads so i need one that keeps the speed high and dosent turn off( only neeed to go about 4 metres trough 1 wall)

tbh if you want a totally reliable connection it may be worth your while considering Homeplugs rather than Wireless.

oh i am useing a pc with windows xp, and i am on o2 internet which is adsl+2.

if i use an ethernet thats about 15m long, would it reduce the speed. (thing is i wouldnt like to use it as its a hassle to get it from 1 room to another without making it look a mess.

A 15m ethernet cable run shouldn't slow you down dreadfully, but I Agree it will look messy.

Homeplugs are basically a way to run your network through your mains sockets. Have a look here to give you an idea of price etc.,

i got 16mb internet.

if i use a 15metre ethernet cable, how much would it slow.
or if i use a standard £30ish wireless adapter, going 5metres through one wall how much would that slow it.


homeplugs look a bit expensive for just useing on 1 pc, you know any gd wireless adapteres or pci wireless cads

A 15 metre cable wouldn't have any slowdown effects at those sort of speeds.

As far as wireless goes it depends on what your walls are made of, if they're stud partition walls ( plasterboard nailed to a wooden frame ) then not very much, if they're 2 feet thick stone walls probably somewhat more of an effect!

As far as adaptors go, PCI cards are generally better in my experience than USB dongles both in terms of speed and reliability of connection. I don't know what the O2 wireless box is but any name brand ( Netgear, Belkin, etc., ) wireless cards should work. Probably better to go for the 54g ones. Other people may know of adaptors which work better or worse with the O2 box.

If people on here can't advise you of which cards to use then swing over to Thinkbroadband and see if you get any joy over there.
