    Hi all,

I just tried loading 'Windows XP Service Pack One', but it took about two hours to do ten percent!! (I only have a 56k modem) So I gave up (Unfortunately you cannot restart it once interrupted and you cannot download it through a download manager/accelerator as far as I can tell - goodold microsoft!).

Anyone know where else I could get a copy on cd-rom? Do they offer it in magazine cds at all?

    Cheers,

    Lex.

You could try talking to your systems bloke / BOFH at work (if you have one). IF they're any good, they'll be subscribed to Microsponges Technet which mails out CD's with this sort of stuff every month.

well if it is freeware, it would seem a bit silly to stop someone distribute it!

May I ask what sp1 actually does for me above my current XP home?

Sp1 is a rollup of all the security flaws that have been exposed in XP since its launch. If you reguarly keep you computer up to date uing Windows Update then its probably not that important just yet, although since the Sp1 there has been a couple of critical updates so even with Sp1 there is more required. If you dont keep critical information on your PC then dont worry about it. If you do then I consider it very important.

There are a few other bug fixes and minor changes but nothing to get excited about.

    Thanks Duncan!

I dont know that i need it, my pc is kept isolated from the world, im not willing to let anything mess up the cinema! But i might as well use sp1 if it is the most updated version!

If you keep up to date with all the critical updates on the MS Windows Update site then there is very little new in service pack 1.

I downloaded it last weekend and it was just over 30MB (which takes a while on a 56k modem :( )

If you use your PC a lot online then you really should run the windows update once a week to make sure you have all the latest security patches.

(The official) Windows XP magazine No. 12 December Issue - On sale 3rd Oct.

SP1 is on the coverdisc. At least according to the November issue I have in my hands!

There is a DVD edition that comes out a few days later.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you install XP SP1, you have to agree to Microsofts new End User License Agreement. This give MS the right to install anything they want to your PC in future without notifying you. (eg, Digital Rights Management o prevent you from ripping MP3's, or pirated copy disabling patchs).

It's free to distribute (why wouldn't MS want you to install with that kind of EULA), so your BOFH can supply you with a copy if you ask nicely.

Yes, this is the "bend over and say ahhhhhhh" clause. And there's no real escape. All new patches out of Redmond will have it beofre too long. The only escape is to go the Linux way, which I'm not about to do, as my teeth aren't furry enough.

Remember, Billy G doesn't have to tell you if he's installing something, he just has to feel that it's right for you.

Thanks for replies guys and the link Duncan.

The main reason I want the patch is that my system is buggy and unstable (keeps crashing) at the moment and I am hoping that the patch might help! :(
