Just got wind of the new operating system from windows thats coming out "soon" dont know the date, to be honest, i couldnt be botherd reading the rest of the article. My first reaction was, oh no another windows millenium

no doubt my farther will want to update and will get a dodgy copy of it, so it looks like im going to have to purchase my mp3 player sooner than i thought...hopefully i can still wait out until the new models are out. Although im tempted at the moment jus to buy an external hard drive so i dont have to bother using my player as the back up

Just did a google news search and most of the testers of the BETA 1 say that half the things on the shopping list havent been included. Hoping that they would be including it in the BETA 2

To be honest from what i am reading, its just another money spinner by microsoft...by making people think they are offering significant improvements when really its just the upgrade to XP, as XP was to 2000...the only real different the user sees is the GUI! (graphical user interface)

Cheers! Just a glorified press release. Kind of garbage I churn out most days! Exciting stuff though: new OS. Say what you like about Bill and the boys, but they do listen to users and try to improve things.

Remember, it's only Beta. MS said they won't release it till it's as perfect as they can get it (least, that's what I heard).

Some times they do, well actually they do alot, its just the amount of viruses and problems that i have come accross as windows user....then again, i dont trust any other OS! therefore i cant see myself swapping, i was amazed at the advances in the user interface when i got my XP computer, but that was beacuse i was used to 95. wonder what the new one will look like

Yeh! Hopefully! We can always hope that they have pulled their thumbs out a bit on this one, considering they have had a good few years to develop it. To be honest though im quite happy with XP now that its settled down, principally i dont want the new one as there will be too many problems with it to start

Unless you have to buy a brand new OEM PC, wait at least two years before switching OS. That's my view.

Good job my school got XP over 2000! We got a specialist status in maths and IT and henceforth got all the old computers upgraded and 4 new class sets of computers and various laptops, however there was a big debate over which operating system, all the IT staff said 2000, whislt pupils preferard XP beacuse it was easier to use. Pupils got their wish, bet the IT staff are glad they did as they would have lost so much man time and money upgrading it all

I'm still trying to work out why the PC OS choice affects your MP3 player decision

Longhorn has been "coming out" for ages now and I will believe it will be out in 2006 when I see it ;)
A lot of business users are using Windows 2000 and will not swap out an OS that does the job they want just fine, so it won't matter to them that Microsoft won't be producing upgrades etc for W2K, but they will still be providing security updates until about 2010, so to say it's not being supported isn't quite true !

If anyone wants to see what Vista "Longhorn" will likely end up looking like when it eventually arrives sometime in the future, look at a Mac running OS X today!
Apart from a few minor differences, that's pretty much what you'll be getting.
Personally, I'd ask for a free update, as that's all it is - all the talk of a new way of exploring your computer's files, etc - vnaished. New this and new that - vanished. So, what are they actually giving you - XP wrapped up in new clothes. Nice, very nice! Money for old rope.
Mind you OS X's Finder isn't great either - gets the job done, but could be better.

Being a complete girl for a sec, I love the way OS X looks. So, even if MS don't deliver precisely what was promised, I'd be happy with that kind of GUI/interface.

    See, I'm not TOTALLY anti-Apple! ;)

Always makes me laugh when people say things like XP=2000 with bits added....

XP is a *massive* change over 2000.... realiability and security rocketed skywards by comparison...

And if you dont see that... you simply dont use PC's as anything more than a distraction (nothing wrong with that BTW)...

I support PC's and Servers both in work and home contexts... and XP is just outstanding compared to any other MS Windows release...

We have Vista running on an Office PC at the moment... but it's Beta 1 so we didnt expect much... I dont know if Vista will have the same level of improvement as XP did over 2000... I personally doubt it...

But it matters little... most people (business or home) replace Windows when they replace the PC... and it will remain that way...

    Mark.

Apologies, Mark - was hideously oversimplying with that rather flippant post! Personal experience alone shows me how much better XP is than 2000 - even if I'm not a techie myself! :)
