Windows Vista won't boot up

When I turn my pc on it goes past where it says press f2 or f12, but after that it gots to a black screen with a White line flashing in the top left corner. Please help as I don't want loose any of files that are already on the pc. Thank you.

Have you got a CD in the drive? Take it out.

If not, try booting from your Vista DVD (if you have one) and try a startup repair.
