Windows needs to install apple device recovery drivers

Hope someone can help me. My father has tried to update his 3G to Ios4. It is stuck in recovery mode and when you connect the USB it is asking to insert the disc for the drivers.
I have re-installed iTunes and still the same thing happens.
Obviously iTunes cannot detect the iPhone so it is impossible to do a restore.

Help!

Try a different USB port. I've had this happen a few times and this always fixed it!

Or a different computer. Everytime I update mine does this and for some reason my computer just won't recognise my phone so have to use a friends and it works fine.

All sorted thanks to a very helpful guy at apple customer care.

Solution was to turn vista into classic view and delete all apple programs. These couldn't be seen in normal view.
It seems deleting iTunes wasn't enough and all the components had to be expunged.

Thanks for all the input. You were right assuming it was the pc/laptop
