Hi,
i bought a secondhand computer which the guy had built himself from scratch, He gave me a load of discs with it i checked with him about the installation disc the guy told me the installation disc was with it,I thoght great thats the most important disc i need in case of a computer crash a few months later the computer crashed and i looked for the installation disc to reinstall reformat the hard dive but guess what the pig did not include it i paid £250 for it, I did manage to use a windows copy but i cant upgrade the windows on it so i looked around for a windows disc and its about £90 this guy really conned me big time on this computer , anything else i can do, thanks

Do you have the license key sticker on the case for the version of Windows you are running?
If you do then all you need to do is beg, borrow or steal the correct install disc and just use your own license key to do the install. It is the license you pay the money for, not the install CD. As long as you have the license you can use any available install disc to reinstall Windows.

You say you asked and he told you it was included, did you check there and then?

As Mark says, if there is a license sticker on the case, then that's the first step, you just need to borrow a Windows install CD from somebody. However, have you first checked to see if you have one called the "Windows Repair Disk"?

Also, as Singh said, have you asked?

This sounds a bit fishy to me.

When you say "computer crashed" - what has happened?

Why don't you just spend some money and purchase Windows 7 (£73)

what happened a screen came up saying the computer had encountered a problem and it asked me if i wanted to start up windows normally or in safe mode and it said to press the enter button i tried this on both options but after a few seconds it did not start up and went back to the same old screen all the time i must have tried it about 50 times and rebooted it loads of times so assumed the computer was crashed, what do you think anyway will a cheap windows disc that people sell on ebay work if they include the key

Can you remember the last thing you did on the computer? Had the windows updates run recently?

At startup, do you get the option to run the recover console?

It does sound like either way, you will need an XP CD to resolve the issue.

In answer to your question, I see no problem buying a cheap copy from an auction site, so long as it comes with the product code.

Before paying out money for a new copy of XP you may want to see if you can repair your current install. You can download the repair console that is normally found on the XP install disk and copy it to CD or floppy disks - see Here for details.
