Windows boot error

First time i boot my PC i get to XP screen with the blue coloured bar in the centre.

Normally it goes from left to right and then i get my desktop.

But for the last 5 days on boot up the blue bar gets a 1/4 of way, then the PC freezes. When i do a soft reboot it boots up normally.

I ran a full viruse scan and that found nothing bad.

I ran Norton Utilities - Norton Windoctor but that never found this problem.

But what could be causing this problem and how can i fix it ?

have you tried pressing F8 after POST and selecting "last known good configuratuion". this will hopefully put right that has gone wrong without loseing any precious data.

Thanks for your help :)

I tried that but it didnt work.

In the end i had to reformat my hard drive and re-install the whole lot which fixed the problem.
