I have been reading up about all these windows 8 tablets popping up everywhere and it just excites me to the core for having a full blown OS in Tablet form.

Windows 8 blows the socks off any Ipad or Android devices. Even the Atom powered Windows 8 tablets are like for like in terms of grunt but MILES ahead in terms of functionality.

    Your thoughts?

I have a Surface RT 64gb and it is annoying to use.

Surfing the internet is so laggy that it is painful. Yes I understand that IE gives a more complete internet browser than other tablets but the stop start stop start loading is infuriating. Coupled with the fact that you do not know whether it has registered your finger tap or that it doesnt automatically bring up the on screen keyboard when you click a typing box/area just makes Windows RT un-user friendly.

The RT is also very heavy with a relatively poor battery life.

I bought an RT mainly to use office on a tablet. However, it just doesnt work because of the other failings with the tablet.

All this is before you come across the lack of apps available.

I wanted to like the RT and windows but there is a reason why it is not selling.

As for the pro, you may as well get an ultrabook. Windows could have made more of an impact selling the pro for RT money and getting rid of RT all together.

Problem with window tablets is price. You need a 7 inch windows pro equivalent to be available at £200-£300 or a normal sized version to fetch £300-450. Windows RT just does not cut it. Otherwise Android and iPads will continue to dominate. At the moment the Pro is competing with ultrabooks, not tablets.

This. Windows too far behind at the moment for any serious consideration.

What apps are you missing? The major ones are iplayer, sky go and Facebook IMO - none of which bother me really (though having an x86 tablet I can use iplayer and sky go desktop)

Pop up keyboard works perfectly if you use ie from start screen and not the desktop ie version (which is skewed for mouse and keyboard obviously) - if it were me I would bin the desktop in rt, its too confusing (as shown by this issue).

I have never found the browser on my old rt or current vivotab smart slow - unless on flash heavy sites.

Using my iPad mini feels very basic in comparison now.

I've consider a Windows Pro Surface, just awaiting price, and if new chips come out.
As a crossover tablet and laptop, it's probably the happy medium of mediocrity of each that i need.

I am waiting for a windows 8 pro tablet. Preferably a transformer type.

I don't need apps. I just want a tablet that will run my current windows software. Android and others are not in the frame.

An Atom Win8 pro would work for me but they are as hard to find as donkey eggs. ;)

You can install windows pro on the atoms tabs yourself, as long as you use 32 bit version.

It's easy and the drivers for the tablet, post install, are widely available.

Problem is, I can't find the tablet I am looking for. Tried googling. No stock, unavailable etc. I want a UK keyboard so US and EU sites are of no use. I even emailed ASUSUK enquiring about VIVO but had no reply.

I didn't want to pay over the odds for an intel, and Atom is sufficient for my limited needs. I like the concept of the ASUS Transformer. My wife has the TF300 which is great for photo and emails but will not run windows (of course ).

Not too fussed, TBH. Screen res does not matter for what I want it for.

It will run the windows software I have. :smashin:

Just wonder when it will be available in the UK/EU?

I've reviewed a few Windows 8 tablets on these forums. Check the reviews link above!!
I've got one coming next week to review actually.

My main issue is that Windows 8 for a touch screen is awful, almost to the point of it being infuriating to use. I'm holding out to see what Windows 8.1 brings, but a basic example where you have to manually bring up the keyboard to enter text on a website.

Of course it has a positive that it will run any Windows software.

You need to spend more time using it, windows 8 on a touchscreen is superb.

Get out of the habit of clicking and go with the swipiness - ios7 certainly has...

Edit - the bringing up the keyboard is as per above - only applicable when using the desktop (in which case why are you using the touchscreen!?) comes up automatically in the metro interface, perhaps spend a bit more time using before reviewing?

Thanks, Greg. The T100 has a keyboard dock, which is why I am looking at it, and as you say, Win 8.1 could be a different animal. :D

Yep, this is the one I'm waiting for.
Not sure how much it will retail here, probably around £350 :thumbsdow

but just looks perfect for my needs. Just hope Bay Trail's performance is good enough....

Quite a lot of new tablets coming soon:

    http://m.winsupersite.com/windows-8/fall-2013-windows-tablet-preview

The dell & Lenovo ones look good - i quite like rt myself, so might look into the Nokia.

Bay trial is, apparently, on par with a core2duo - especially the quad core ones, there's a really good in depth review on anandtech, gets a very good write up

I am also looking forward to the 10" Nokia tablet, should be a solid performer.

I think it depends on your use case - I've had a surface RT and an asus me400t, overall I preferred the RT - it felt more solid and reliable, partly due to better build quality, but also as it's impossible to install extra drivers or software it was more reliable (installing display link driers completely borked the video drivers on the me400c for example :( )

Other than sky go and downloadable iplayer I didn't miss much desktop software

because the Asus T100 appears to be competitively priced, it seems a bit pointless to go for RT when you can have full Windows for a similar price.

Possibly, but the better screen, form factor and the 'impossible to Bork' quality may sway me...

    Just need to wait....

Absolutely delighted with my Dell Latitude 10 ST2. Windows 8 Pro, 128GB SSD, 4 cell (16+ hours) battery, 3G. All for £300 on the Dell Outlet; supposedly 'certified refurbished' (but built to order).

    Sorry, Cirian

Not updated yet - waiting until I get a chance to connect it to the LAN - it would be a slow download over wifi....

As far as I know, all models on the Dell Outlet will be ST2 - it's the newest model. As to differences - I'm not sure; you would probably need to do a bit of searching around online.
