Windows 7 very slow

My system is an i5 2500k in an Asus z68 motherboard with 12 gigs of ram and a gts 450 (upgrading this week to a 580 ). Windows seems to get ever so slow for no apparent reason like when I'm on the forums on one screen and watching frozen planet in standard definition on the other from I player... I'm talking stuttering video and audio and mouse lock ups for a couple of seconds at a time. All at stock, CPU has a closed loop water cooler on.

Which web browser are you using?

Firefox has very poor multi-core optimisation, and if you have two browser windows open, an intensive page loading in one (such as an O2 Flash advert) will slow down the other windows. Google Chrome (and even Internet Explorer) don't suffer to the same extent.
