Whilst I appreciate this is not the computer section, I'm thinking I'll be more likely to understand the answers posted here.
Both my pc (windows 7 ultimate) and my laptop (windows 8.1) are telling me I can register for a free upgrade to windows 10.
So, did I miss windows 9?
    Will it really be free?
    Is it a worthwhile upgrade?
    Surely there's a catch somewhere.
    What shall I do?

There's no Windows 9. If you upgrade to 10 within the year, its free to keep, no catch.

100% free for a year then you pay if you want to upgrade after that

    9 Doesn't exsist

Worthwhile? very subjective really. You need to read up on what it's features and what that means for you.

No catch, you just need a licence for Windows 7/8/8.1 to upgrade.

9 doesn't exist due to the way legacy software checks for OS versions. Some do stupid things like

IF Version LIKE 9* THEN Win98 ELSE WinNT

To avoid that whole cluster****, MS just skipped 9.

Also, Microsoft won't be releasing a Windows 11 or other OS after Windows 10. The plan is Windows 10 will be their last OS & they'll just make upgrades to that.
Patches & for Windows 7 & 8 will eventually end, so you'll have to move to Windows 10 eventually. Might as well do it while it's free.

Saying all that, I prob won't be doing the upgrade myself until the new year. Give Microsoft time to fix any teething problems & bugs that will inevitably be there during the first few months.

And a simple Windows 10 search would have found the thread created just last week, but that would have taken effort I suppose.

Panasonic skipped 40 due to tetraphobia and went straight from the VT30 to the VT50. The VT30s are dying from blown boards and the VT50s are going yellow at the sides. These are the lucky ones. What an unlucky VT40 might have done is something we can only guess at, but I imagine it would have involved exploding. Naturally, the reviewers would fail to notice the shards of panel glass embedded in their faces and would award the set "reference" status. But I digress. Slightly.

So what excuse have Microsoft for avoiding 9? Nonaphobia? Or is 10 just 9 in kit form, leaving the hapless user to bend the 1 and attach it to the 0? I can't believe it would be some nonsense due to legacy software. Surely not.

That was a rumour, but I believe it's been found to be false. Their official line is something along the lines of it just being such a big jump, they felt it deserved to be two versions newer lol.

I like this one, which is similar:

"Microsoft’s seemingly arbitrary naming convention of “Windows 10″ is an interesting one. It is clearly a strong version number — and it’s also a neat way of distancing it from Windows 8, which Microsoft really wants to bury in the living room couch cushions when no one is looking. In fact, this may even be the same trick that Microsoft used to make us forget about Vista: “Hey, with a name like Windows 7, it must be very different from Vista.”

Windows 10 is apparently also the 'last' version of Windows, in future Windows 10 will just be updated.

Today Google taught me that Windows 8.1 is really version 6.3 and Windows 10 will be version 6.4. But you probably all knew that already :D

Wonder if work will take a shot at this. Windows 3.1 is a pain to work with.

I thought it was something to do with the number 9 being unlucky in the Far East?

I've been in some buildings which have no floor numbered as 13, I've always thought it odd that something as unprovable as a superstition is taken so seriously that buildings floors are labelled in such a way. Then again, look how many buildings are made with pretty crosses on the roof, to worship a make believe character...Imo of course.

Nah that can't be it. 9 is a lucky number in Chinese cultures. 4 is unlucky though as it's pronounced similarly to 'death'.

Not got my update icon. Has appeared on the other computers in the houshold.

It's a genuine retail Windows 7 Home Premium. Bought two at launch date - the copy on my son's PC is showing the icon but nothing on mine.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

My only concern is that the check is telling me my Cyprus trackpad wont work on my laptop after I update. Will 10 have it's own drivers?

Double check you have the update that is required.
These are the two updates you need for that icon to appear.

Is there an easy way to search for what is installed. I did a google search for these two and the found a direct download and install for the first one. When I tried it, Windows told me that it was already installed.

Couldn't find a direct install for KB2952664 but lots of warnings about it and posts saying that it had been reissued after problems. So is there a way to check whether I have it installed.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Isn't there a update history in Windows Update? Sure I've seen it before.

There is but non-searchable (as far as I can see) list of about 400 updates.

I've managed to look through my installed updates - have both of those. Any idea why I don't have the invitation link on my status bar.

It's not out until 29th July anyway. There will be plenty of ways/links/downloads available from Microsoft to update come 29th July.

All the icon will do between now & 29th July is nag you every day, reminding you to update on 29th July.
I could PM you every day, & nag you to update every day until 29th, if you really want the update icon 'experience' :rotfl:;)

I've got KB3035583 and KB2952664 updates, both installed successfully in April 2015 on my Win7 Pro laptop.

No invitation link on my status bar either.
