RESTLESS NATIVES

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH
THE FRIGHTENED CITY

We are giving YOU the chance to win copies of all three of these Studiocanal Vintage Classics on Blu-ray

RESTLESS NATIVES

Fans of Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero would do well to add RESTLESS NATIVES to their collection. First released in 1985 this spirited, establishment-mocking caper movie remains a much-loved and thoroughly enjoyable comedy gem featuring a soundtrack by Big Country. It’s the story of two under-employed Scots who achieve wealth and notoriety as modern-day highwayman holding up coachloads of tourists wearing a wolf and a clown mask and armed only with a puffer gun! Their exploits make them a bigger tourist attraction than the Loch Ness Monster, much to the annoyance of the inept local police.

Starring Vincent Friell, Joe Mullaney, Ned Beatty, Bernard Hill, Mel Smith and directed by Michael Hoffman from a script by Ninian Dunnett, the new Blu-ray and DVD release comes with additional features including a new documentary with cast and crew and Bruce Watson from Big Country.

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH

New for 2021, STUDIOCANAL unveils the extended cut of Roger Corman’s iconic horror film THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, stunningly restored in 4K by Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation and The Academy with funding from the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation. Starring horror stalwart Vincent Price (HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, HOUSE OF WAX, EDWARD SCISSOR HANDS) in one of the finest performances of his career, alongside a knock-out supporting cast including Jane Asher (ALFIE, DEATH AT A FUNERAL), Hazel Court (THE PREMATURE BURIAL, THE RAVEN), David Weston (BECKET, THE RED BARON) and Nigel Green (JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, ZULU) and based on the classic gothic fiction tale The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy by Edgar Allan Poe. THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH is considered one of Roger Corman’s (THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE RAVEN) most distinctive works and an all-time horror classic.

Unseen by audiences until it premiered at the 63rd BFI London Film Festival in 2019 to great applaud, the meticulous 4K restoration brings back to life the striking and bold cinematography from Nicolas Roeg. The amazing use of colours in MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH was thought to influence his love of bold colours in his subsequent directing work (DON’T LOOK NOW being a prime example). The new version of the film reinstates a number of censored scenes which were cut from the original 1964 release.

THE FRIGHTENED CITY

A year before he was thrust into stardom as James Bond, Sean Connery gave a spell-binding performance as the brooding, muscular Irish enforcer Paddy Damion with a streak of rakish charm, with electrifying support from Yvonne Romain as the beautiful gangster’s moll Anya and from Herbert Lom as criminal mastermind Waldo Zhernikov.

THE FRIGHTENED CITY, with its gritty depiction of the criminal underworld was shot in moody black and white by Desmond Dickinson and directed by John Lemont (The Shakedown). With nods to classic American and Italian crime thrillers, THE FRIGHTENED CITY is a tense, stylish gem of 60s British cinema.

Not exactly a competition if you are required to buy in is it @Casimir Harlow it's more of a lottery ticket I would say. Pretty much like those shallow TV people that suggest they are giving away big prizes if you phone in now at a premium cost.
