Hi,

I have just installed Win7 ultimate on one of my HTPCs and I am having some problems with S3 Standby.

Some times it works fine, but about 30% of time that it goes into standby everything seems to go well until the point when the power light would normally switch off..... but it doesn't then actually switch off.

It basically then gets stuck with all the main devices powered down with only a few items powered, and there is no way to wake it up again. The only devices that seem obviously powered are the case fans, the DVD drive (it opens and closes, but does not read a disc) and the remote control receiver (which flashes if I press a button), but the PC as a whole it is totally unresponsive. :thumbsdow

If I switch the PSU rocker switch to 0 and then back to 1, the system seems to the recover as if it had come out of hibernate (but I have not asked it to hibernate!).

Any ideas what might be causing this? It is destroying the WAF, which is already severely dented after rendering the system inoperable during the upgrade! She even said "I JUST WANT A NORMAL TV LIKE EVERYONE ELSE" today (and then swore at me like a dock worker), so I have to fix this one quickly .

Normal TV, what does she know

(P.S. no offence intended to any dock workers, I am sure you are all much more tolerant of my wife!)

I have tried it on previous system a few years ago, but I had not though of trying it this time.

I updated my GPU driver last night (in case that might have been the problem), so I will see how that goes first.

Thanks

if its enabled try disabling 'hybrid sleep' in the power options. Hybrid sleep will cause it to go into hibernation after a period in S3.

I thought MST was more of a problem than a cure when I tried it (just my opinion).

What programs have you installed in addition to Windows?

I've had the "normal TV" talking to as well, years ago though! We've had Media Center in the lounge for about 7 years now, with various issues over the years. She's very happy with it now though, taking for granted that we have 100's of recorded programmes and haven't seen an advert for years. The odd problem or hiccup is now tolerated.

At the risk of insulting your intelligence... It's not recording TV at the time is it?!

I have basically installed windows, MediaPortal and XMLTV GUI, that is pretty much all that is on the computer (so far)!

It is definitely not recording TV. I have been using this hardware for years as an HTPC running MediaPortal for a few years without problem, so it is definitely a windows 7 problem.

I also seem to be having problems with my Compro S350 recovering from standby (it doesn't tune to any channels after recovering from standby), so it may well be that particular bit if hardware causing the problem.

I'm probably alone in my opinion then! I did try it, but I got a bit annoyed at the changes it made to various settings. I'm a bit of a purist, and like to leave things unchanged if they're not broken.

I only briefly tried it, and I didn't really have a problem that needing fixing anyway. I find Win 7 seems to handle standby extremely well.

I have had a bad experience with it in the past too, which is why I am trying other things first.

I am going through the process of making sure all my drivers are up to date and have just updated my BIOS. The problem is that the failure is intermittent, and also occurs at the exact point were the system would normally power off, so diagnosis is impossible! I think trial and error is the way forward sadly! I have however managed to fix the driver problem with the S350 card though.

The only other thing I can think of is the PSU, but I can't see how a change in OS would trigger the problem (I added another hard drive, but I am nowhere near the limit of the PSU).

OK, thanks for all the help so far, but I am still having the same problem. I have installed MST and tried all the debug options, but the same problem is happening. The only change in the characteristics is that when I remove power from the system when it hangs, instead of restoring the session from the disc (as if it was recovering from hibernate), it now powers up with the option to start in safe mode etc (this change occured when I put the tick in the option to "disable selective USB suspend").

Anyway, looking at the logs, there is a key different between a good suspend and a bad one. Basically, after booting back up after a bad suspend the logs always report "cSuspendInitiator - UseLegacyCall_ == false", and when I have a good suspend, this line never appears.

Below is a copy of my log files where there is a good resume at 07:11:14.237 (initiated by WOL), then there was a good sleep at 10:50:19.252 and a good resume for a schduled recording at 16:54:02.866. Finally, after the recording the system went into standby, but hung and didn't fully power-off at 17:59:56.673. I then did a hard power-reset at 18:46:10.535 (after which a new session of MST begins).

Does anyone have any ideas what I should change to fix this problem (and why would it be intermittent?

Thanks again

Wed 28 Dec 2011 18:46:10.535 - cSuspendInitiator - UseLegacyCall_ == false

Have had these problems and in my case was hardware related. One was Samsung blu ray drive firmware, the other was some interaction between my ATI GPU and the rest of the hardware. Swapping the GPU for Nvidia (with my setup) sorted things.

My problems were not waking, no video output when waking, not sleeping.

But everything was fine with XP SP3 until I installed Win 7 on the system. It must be software, firmware or driver related surely?

Google "cSuspendInitiator - UseLegacyCall_"

I don't know your setup, but a quick scan through the results seems to show nvidia gfx cards being mentioned a few times.

Thanks spacemanc, but the threads that mention the NVIDIA gfx card refer to the system not waking up from sleep properly (waking up with a blank screen), but my problem is that the system does not power-off going into standby.

That said, it could be because of the NVIDIA card, so I have done a driver uninstall and reinstall and I am testing it now (no failures so far, but I can have 4-5 successful cycles (which generally get me excited that it is fixed) followed by one bad one, so it usually takes a day or do to know if the fault is there or not!

Well, I thought I had cracked it, but I haven't! :thumbsdow

Based upon what Spacemanc said, I did a full uninstall and reinstall of my NVIDIA drivers and I then had about 12 successful standby and restores over 36 hour period, but then this afternoon it happened again!

I am really getting sick of this  it is destroying the WAF (and my own reliance on the system). It is impossible to go away and leave the system and be able to rely on it!

If anyone has any other suggestion of things to try I would really appreciate the help! :lease:

Thanks

All I could suggest is standard debug/troubleshooting steps.

Remove anything you can do without. Swap any parts you have swappable parts for. Then reintroduce things one at a time, days apart.

Perhaps fiddle with power settings in Device Manager. Make notes of changes made, otherwise it may work and you won't know what the problem was.

I was worried that might be the only answer!!!

Happy New Year
