I will go out on a limb here and say no because no dvd player is ment to be region free. You can hack them but they are ment to be the Region Code of the territory they are in so R1 for the US and R2 for the UK.

Not a chance. PS2 wasn't region free. Xbox wasn't region free. PSP wasn't region free. I doubt the 360 will be.

I think originally it was to prevent people from buying a DVD of a film from the US before that film had hit the cinema in your country because back in the late 90s the release gap was 3-6 months but over the years they seem to have got it down to weeks if not the same day so DVDs are released near enough everywhere on the same day now so region coding has pretty much lost its original purpose.

Dont hold your breath - The xbox has been out for years and there is no Region free device for it unless you chip it.

One of the reasons is because of distribution rights. For some films Fox or another film company have distribution rights for America, but not overseas. So the company that then has the overseas rights would be missing out on the money.

As for the xbox 360 being a multi region dvd player, i doubt it very much. However there has been talk of the games themselves being region free. As then there wouldn't really be a legit reason to get your xbox 360 modded.

With the internet opening markets on a major global scale, they really should make everything region free. The whole NTSC/PAL problem is gone. The whole power step down/up thing is gone. The whole 6 months early excuse is gone. There are no valid technological reasons why everything is not reason free. It's all commercial and market exploitation.
