Not that there's anything wrong with the Dolby Digital transfer :D, it'd just be interesting to have a DTS transfer available...

How likely is it, if at all?

There is more chance of George Lucas publically dressing up as Princess Leia and proclaiming Peter Jackson to be the target of his affections that there is of getting an official Star Wars DVD with a DTS soundtrack.

i dont understand that thought...... THX isnt a sound format like DD or dts..... is it that THX is linked to DD so doesnt like dts? If so, well its more of a case of persuading dts to get a thx logo! or i could be wrong

THX is not a surround format, it is a set of technical tandards and methods that enable accurate home reproduction of a theatrical release's soundtrack & picture.

Not sure why Lucas doesn't release in DTS. There are other THX disc with DTS tracks (Die Hard, Terminator etc) so I doubt there is some THX/Dolby clause.

I think George Lucas being the wise money spinning machine he is will probably release DTS versions sometime in the future and fleece the consumers for as much cash as he can get.

well it would be wise if lucas could get dts on board, with him being tied to dolby, this almost ties THX to being a sound format (almost) hence, were dts to get ahead of the game from dolby, that then means that digital soundtracks would be prefferred in a non thx format..... something im sure lucas wouldnt want. Mind you, dolby themselves have fair clout and might get peed off if lucas had dts under his wing as well as them....

Same for the Monsters Inc. DTS soundtrack - you get this trailer with a robot which plays all sorts of surround effects and it says something like 'THX approved for the best picture and sound'

I always thought dts and thx were pretty much mutually exclusive.

thx goes for pinpoint accuracy whereas dts has a wider effect.

Funny how the THX Ultimate demo has the pod-sequence and other film clips in DTS.

DTS and THX are not mutually exclusive, and there have been many THX-certified DTS releases (some of which are listed above by previous posters). THX does not specify which audio formats a disc may or may not include: this is the responsibility of the owner of the disc's content. THX are equipped to work with which ever audio format a disc's producer chooses, including DTS.

In June 2002 THX was spun off as an independent company, and is no longer a subsidiary of George Lucas' Lucasfilm (with a new name: THX Digital Works). Lucas doesn't appear to be sold on DTS, so has not chosen to include DTS as an option on most Lucasfilm products, but he is not totally opposed to it either, as he did not prevent Columbia TriStar from including a DTS soundtrack on the R1 Superbit re-release of Labyrinth.

I heard a while ago a rumour that a few trial/promo DVD's of Ep.1 were released with a DTS soundtrack. Anyone else heard this?
I remember somone in the US selling a DVD that was said to have a DTS soundtrack it was way up in the $600 region when it was taken off to be sold privately. Trouble is it seems unlikely that it was a real region 1 version.

I suspect that given GL's complete lack of creativity in recent years we WILL get a dts mix - only it be will part of the never ending re re re re releases he will do with the original movies to keep him busy for the next twenty years. In fact I suspect that the original theatrical cuts will be so different from what will then pass as 'Star Wars' that he'll release them all over again as a new cut!
