I have loads of family pics and home made dvd movies etc on my pc.

If I were to burn them on a dvd / dvdrw will the 360 play them?

    Cheers.

Videos have to be WMV format to play.

Since the August update ( http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69305 ) it should work fine. You need to make sure the movies are in a suitable format but generally it's pretty forgiving. Streaming from a home PC to the 360 is also possible, but slightly more restrictive on the formats I think.

Well the 360 plays dvds from the tray yes?

If I were to author my own dvd - family movies etc on dvd authoring software, then would it play as its essentially a proper dvd, just on a home burnt disc?

Well, that was easier than I thought.

CD-R didn't work at all - although this was a multisession disc.

DVD-RW had pictures, music and video. The .jpg, .mp3 and .wmv worked fine. .mpg, .avi and .ogg were not recognised.

Yes. I have used my Sony RDRHXD710S (a DVD player/recorder with hard disk built in) to write a film onto a DVD-RW that the 360 can play. The only problem I found was that it only reads discs formatted in Video mode; the 360 showed discs formatted in VR mode as being unreadable.
