just want to ask, do you guys think rear projection tv prices will go down by alot in january as it is the sale month.

ive seen a prices now from £800 for a 42" but on ebay about 600-700 but the same size but with a brand name.

thing is, im a full time student at uni (living with mum and dad) and would love the idea of having a 42" rear projection tv in my room to watch tv on, movies and play xbox on.
you can already see the dilemma, being a student, im not the one to have alot of money to play around with, so was wondering if there would be a price crash on rear projection tv's in january. id ideally like to spend £500 if possible for a name branded machine, i.e. toshiba, philips. (not sony as i know they'd still cost a bomb!) if £500 was too much to ask for, id max spend about £650 on it.

im not so fussed about getting it brand spanking new or second hand.

if anyone works in a shop or company that deals with these tv's, id love to know what kind of percentage they will go down in price when its on sale!

    thanks in advance, james

i reckon you should keep your eyes peeled on classifeids forum here as the sale of 42" plasma is none stop and i am sure there are some Tosh RPTV owners itching for upgrades either to Plasma or the new DLP PRTV's coming i stupid sizes or 60"+ with incredible PQ.......
    http://www.currys.co.uk:80/martprd/...lhkcflgceggdhhmdfhm.0&page=Product&sku=933228
will probably be doen to £6-700 by jan sales but a 2 year old tosh is probably going to give better PQ....
I do hope you have a huge bedroom tho..

ahhhhhhh, nice thanks, my bedroom is pretty average size, its one of three bedrooms and is at the front part of the house (nearest to the road). ive already made sketches and jotted down ideas on how to re-organise my room in order to get appropriate space. i have also worked out how i can get an effective 5.1 surround sound speaker set up. im really looking forward to this as ive just finished paying off my car!

ive also worked out an alternative room for the set up which is going to be the front room, the only disadvantage is that i wont be able to play the xbox for hours on end as my parents would want to watch tv too.

im not too fussed about the age of the tv, to me, they all pretty much look all modern like the ones ive seen on ebay, even though they are 2 years + old. i doubt ill be able to get an up to date machine anyway, so perhaps the last batch of the 2 year old models maybe sold at stores in the sale? that would be great. i wouldnt even mind a refurbished one at the right price. all that no returns they advertise is bullocks, ive got rights as a consumer that what i have been sold is working properly and if not, i can still return it for a FREE repair or even exchanged for a new one!!!!! (providing it hasnt been advertised as faulty and i have proof of purchase).

im off to the pub :p and on the way im going to try and pick up the home cinema mag!

Why not think about getting a projector?
You could get one for less than re-pro, and have an even bigger picture.
(much easier to move about as well!)
    Just a thought.

yeah im back from the pub now, feel a bit tipsy and dizzy, mates driving round in circles in the car park shooting eachother with paintball guns and ****, i put my arm out to remember the pain of being shot with one and owwwwwwww, it stings like a mofo!

anyway, yeahhhhhhh, thats the ****, thanks dragon for your help, that toshiba and sony one is within(ish) my budget, hopefully in the jan sale they should go down in price? hopefully there should be some vouchers out like you said, perhaps a 10% off when you spend **** loads in store. when i start saving (next pay day!), im sure ill have one of those beautys in the house by jan. if i didnt find a voucher, im sure i can get some type of discount from concessions at work, but then again, its up town so its more likely to be more expensive there, ahhhh well just wait and see.

i wouldnt mind a projector, but costs alot to set up doesnt it, got to get the screen, wall mounts plus bulbs which cost like £150 a time dont they :S also, thing is with them, youd get how many hours out of it? where as with the tv, you can just leave it on all day and night playing mtv base without worrying how many hours youve got left, if i had a full time job and stuff id get one, but im just thinking of future costs and whether its suits my lifestyle at home.

thanks again for the info dragon, oh btw, do you recommend any good magazines to read about the subject 'home cinema'? apart from reading around the net, i just want to top up my knowledge of the televisions so by the time i get one, i would know a bit about that and make sure i make the right choice.

actually, a projector doesnt sound that bad either! can get like 8000 to 10,000 hours out of a bulb right? just read some of this on another post, hmmmmm, research begins..........zzzzzzz

update: ohhhhh man, just found out that life is for a crt projector. the small projectors have 3000 hours in eco mode or something. does that mean that because it is on eco mode, there is a suffice in the quality of the picture?

if i divide 3000 (bulb life) by 5 (average time of use per day), that will equal to 600, that doesnt sound too shabby actually. what name brands have the cheapest but good quality in picture bulbs?

update: damn, i just looked on ebay for projector screen and they cost just as much as the projector itself, if not, the same!!!!! are there in el cheapo ones out there or ways of making your own ........(goes to search on google)

ive updated this message about 3 times now!

update: disadvantage ive found is you cant really use it in a light room, the room has to be dimmed or dark to get a full effect. so if its summer, or even daytime, i wont be able to play xbox with a full effect of picture quality :(

Well RPTV's look crap in high light.... and dont you have curtains? RPTV is a small projector in a big box..... Ebay is overpriced and full of fraudsters and knock offs........ Just my opion mind....... but some utter rubbish sells for far too much money!
Basic pull down screen 5 feet plus wide under £200 S/H LCD PJ £400-600 Bulb £150 ish...... keep a small TV 20-21" CRT for MTV and have PJ for full HiDef Xbox.... If you have never seen gaming on a BIG screen i suggest you try and find it..... Xbox HD on 8 foot wide screen is incredible! And PJ takes up so little space in room can use a TV wall braket and just sit it on. Hook it into your hifi for sound and away you go........

    BauerCTU: you lucky bugger!

they wont let me have a student loan :(, what pc did you end up getting?
i know how you feel bra, ive got a 26" crt tv in my room and its just not big enough, by any means. maaaaaaan, imagine that though bra, crt in your room playing xbox, films, porn ohhhhhh yes porn. what uni you at by the way?

horny dragon, im going to take up your advice on checking out what the projector is like in person so im going to go to the electronics shop about 10 mins walk from me tomorrow. hopefully theyll have a xbox set up, if not prob just check out with a dvd playing.

as with the ebay, i know what you mean, but surely i can get help from some guys in this forum so i wont get knocked off and make sure i got some quality kit, plus i can always request to check out the projector playing at the sellers place.

ive now figured out a few alternative set ups for my room having a projector in it. one of them involves moving nothing!!!!!! woohoo

in the meantime, im going to do some more research, do you guys have any suggestions on some good mags to read? not just about projectors but home cinemas in general?

thanks for the replies though guys

i ended up building a Athlon 64bit system with a Leadtek 6800GT  im so happy. i could have had a projector at that moment but i do a computer science degree and needed a new pc for uni work, o sorry i meant GAMING :D . my CRT aint to bad its 32" but i have a massive room and it isnt "movie" enought for me. im in liverpool uni as stated above i stayed at home, couldnt leave my city for anywhere. good luck with the projector buying :hiya:

also you dont need any mags this forum has all the information you need for all aspects of AV. have gr8 guys here and people who work in the industry who are always willing to help. check Horny's post count :smashin: some would say they'd rather be here than do work, i know i do :)

they use bra in wales? im from london, saaaaafff london!

amd64's are the ****, i saw a daytime programme comparing it with a top the range mac, G5??? and it outclassed it. first it had better graphics and it had a quicker frame rate, about twice the speed than the mac and was much better for online gaming. it was also loading large files alot faster too.

computer science! not another one, 2 mates of mine just started their degree and one just finished in queen marys. they the second highest paid job at the moment for new graduates, first is corporate law. my friends gf is doing that, shes 23 and on £27k!!!! for her first job.

theres a place near me, looks pretty good, only really walked passed it. had some expensive kit displayed at the window and had a massive plasma there too so from the looks of just their display, they should be pretty cool. thats even if they do projectors.

all this talk is just getting me excited for some reason, i cant wait to have a entertainment system in my room. ill keep the tv as well to watch just normal tv and stuff on though.

I thought students were supposed to be poor.

Always moaning about not having any money etc etc.

The truth always comes out in the end........

we are poor, thats why i have to save for four months in advance to buy a television! i do always moan about having not enough money though, but who doesnt?

at the moment im leaning towards to a 42" rear projection tv as opposed to a projector now, just depends on the prices though.

ive figured out i can have either piece in my room without moving anything. the only thing im concerned about with the rear projection tv is the realiabilty of the lamp, how long it would be before i have to change it as ive heard these cost ££££££ to change, the chance of suffering screen burn (not viewing channels with a 24/7 logo) and about the length of time if needed, for a lamp realignment.

the projector on the other hand would be great, but i dont think for my needs i should really go for it. we'll see how it goes by january, just got to read some peoples suggestions and things first before i decide.

what the heck does that in bold mean? well i cant get a loan, parents earn over thresh hold or something like that. i live at home too, got a part time job paying decent money but i pay bills too, car insurance, petrol + maintenance, internet, mobile phone line rental, clothes, booze. to be honest with you, i dont get a single penny from mum and dad either, (unless i ask which i rarely do as they pay for roof i live under and food! mmmmm foooooood, its only fair though!)

lucky you though, some of my mates get loans too after they pay their tuition fees, they get some good **** too, like do up their car! buy stuff for cheap and sell them on. oh well..........
