Hi, i currently have the Scan AV6 amp+speakers

Below is a photo of how the speakers connect:

What i'm wanting to do is use the speakers on the Onkyo 605 Amp which im thinking of buying for £330. Will the cables connect to the onkyo and give me digital audio properly?

im not very knowledgable about audio, i will upgrade to better speakers in 1yr ish, but for now i'd like to have the onkyo + my current speakers.

Hi, those speakers will be OK .. and all speaker cables are essentially the same, the spring clip termnals on the back of the speaker will accept bare wire, and the amps speaker terminals will accept either bare wire or 4mm terminated banana plugs :smashin:

I would advise using a sub though, assuming we can believe the frequency responce on the back of the speaker (80hz - 20khz) .. you wont be getting much in the way of bass.

If you have a DVD player with either coaxial / optical digital outputs .. then you should have no problems getting Dolby Digital & DTS.

i have a subwoofer, there are 5 small speakers the same as the 1 above and the below subwoofer:

So would i need some different type of connector as the onkyo doesnt have squeeze release connectors like on my speakers. Sorry for being very dumb. I bought the Scan AV6 system about 4yrs ago for £150.

Hi, the speakers connecting to the amp will be OK, as you just connect the spring clip terminals on the speaker - the screw in terminals on the amp :smashin:

But, the sub looks to me, like a passive subwoofer which doesnt have a built in amp .. unfortunately this sub will not be any good for a 5.1 system :( .. however, you could use it though without the sub until you one sorted :smashin:

edit: To be safe, I wouldnt drive them speakers too hard .. in case you blow them, as it doesnt mention the power rating

YIKES!

think i'll be sticking with my current setup then, cant afford new speakers too, i'll probably upgrade the the onkyo 705 in 1yr once that is alot cheaper and get new speakers too.

Get myself a nice toshiba 40ZF lcd too. prices for the highend 37-42" lcd's are too expensive for me £800-900 when they are on offer.

thanks for your help paulst10

Wow, what a coincidence, someone else with the same idea. I’ve been eyeing a SR605 for little while, but can’t afford to get one and some decent speakers at the same time, so was planning on using my old AV6 speakers until I could get something better.

However you say that the subwoofer (which isn’t active) wouldn’t be able to work with a SR605? My existing amp for the AV6 seems to power it OK (though it doesn’t seem to have a lot of bass). Also the little speakers do seem to take a bit of punishment; I’ve had mine for nearly five years now and given them some abuse as well...

Hi, for a 5.1 setup, the AV amp sends a low level signal via single RCA cable into the low level input in the sub.

Does the sub have any more connections on the back ?? a low level input ( RCA input )
