Surely this has got to be for a future HD 'show off' by the BBC when we have actually have a BBC HD service up and running ?

Perhaps premiere / HD 1 will be showing parts if it ? I guess there could be some extra HD feeds on various sats this weekend if so for the states, Australia etc ?

The BBC are, apparently, renting in HD facilities to cover Hyde Park - as their normal in-house OB unit fleet is committed to Wimbledon and other events that weekend.

I would be surprised if an HD recording weren't made.

In the US the broadcast partners for Live8 are MTV - who aren't HD in the US currently - so it is perhaps less likely to be HD in the US?

Well asked RDVDFan - I have just posed this on digitalspy as well! I will be hopping around the sky on Saturday watching for any German HD tests on sat1/Pro7 - seems like too good an opportunity to miss.

Worth looking to see who the German broadcast partners are - if Premier, Sat1 or Pro7 have the rights then it might be interesting. If it is ARD, ZDF etc. then although it might be shot HD - it is less likely to be broadcast in that format?

If TF1 rather than FR2/3 are doing Paris then that might be interesting - as TF1 are aiming to go HD aren't they?

On the other hand - it is a VERY high-profile concert series - so you wouldn't want to be testing new kit on it...

BBC to broadcast in HDTV at Live 8 event
Tuesday, June 28 2005, 16:38 BST -- by Neil Wilkes

The BBC is to give its first public demonstration of HDTV as part of Saturday's Live 8 event.

Crowds gathered at the corporation's 'Big Screen' near Cardiff Castle will be able to enjoy BBC One's coverage of the all-star gig in high definition quality on a 17ft screen. The trial relay features 1080 lines and 50 interlaced frames a second, with a display screen of 1920x1080 pixels.

"This is a great opportunity for the BBC to test its delivery of HDTV at a big public event," said John Varney, BBC Chief Technology Officer. "Who knows? It may prove to be the shape of things to come."

The BBC intends for all of its programming to be produced to HDTV standard by 2010.

Great news. If the feed HD happens to be on 28.2 then you only need to plug your sky dishes cable into the back of your HD box or Skystar etc. I guess it will be on HB though ?

I fail to see how the 16E channel can deliver HD with a symbol rate of only 6111 (6.111 MegaSymbols per second with FEC overhead and headers etc. to come off that).
Can't actually do a calculation on it without knowing the FEC rate (i.e how much is wasted in error correction).

Could be that the bars said HD but were actually SD downconverts?

    That's a plausible explanation, Steve.
Can't sue 'em for it either :)

It just happens that it can result result in possible spreading of yet more untrue rumours by the unititiated or non technically aware.

    Chris-Rather patronising wouldn't you say?
Presumably only the technically aware are allowed to spread rumours!
Least they certainly do plenty of it.

GCI stands for GlobeCast Italy… That’s another indication that it wasn’t an actual high def feed; as far as I know GCI doesn’t have any high def gear.

    Cheers.

    Possibly a little patronising.
My point was that the non technically aware might well just see "HD" and make an immediate false assumption after which they might spread this misinformation.

This doesn't mean that a more technically aware person is allowed to do so - simply less likely to unless drunk.

Apologies to anyone who might have felt offended.

While MTV is not HD, they have been recording events in HD for few years now.

That's good news. I wonder if the Live8 organisation are ensuring that as much as possible of the concert coverage is in HD for archive and future sales potential - especially as HD-DVD and BluRay HD software could both be on the market with in 12 months or so...

    4=11663,V,8687,7/8 Italy
    5=11674,V,8687,7/8 Paris
6=11687,V,8687,7/8 This one seems to be the main channel

These two are FTA at the moment, albeit in 4:2:2:

Both are SD -- showing the stage in Philadelphia and a test card respectively.

That service labeled “HD Live 8 M” is encrypted in BISS. :( That's assuming it is actually HD, which is strange considering it has the same symbol rate as those other SCPC standard def feeds...

    Cheers.

Yep - those symbol rates look very SD don't they?

Out of interest - are the FTA feeds 16:9 or 4:3? (Of course not easy to tell if they are showing bars!)

The pool feeds are all 16:9 FHA (and sampled in 4:2:2), while most of the liveshot feeds are 4:3.

Atlantic Bird 1 at 12.5°W seems to be the bird with the most FTA feeds right now, including the main and backup paths for the BBC. They are all in standard def though. :(

Yep - saw that the European locations and Philadelphia were 16:9 in the BBC Two opening bounce at 1400 BST. Looks like Tokyo is coming back 4:3 - and being ARCed to 14:9 pillarbox.

Johannesburg looked like it might be 4:3 fully ARCed to 16:9 full-frame (lots of chopped off heads and quite soft)

The Graham Norton unilateral live-shot into the BBC Two pre-show looked as if it was originated in 4:3 and cropped to 16:9.

Shame I thought there would be at least 1 FTA HD feed. THere is a good source of latest feeds here incl one for LIve 8 on 16 east http://www.satelliweb.com/index.php?section=livef

Anyone know where to get a plug in for Prog DVB or other for 4:2:2 feeds ?

Believe the Elecard filters cope with 4:2:2 as well as 4:2:0 SD, and also 4:2:0 HD. ISTR they are some of the most comprehensive MPEG2 implementations available in software ?

Add 4:2:2 HD (HP@HL) to the list of profiles supported by Elecard. I tested it successfully with some recent HP@HL football feeds, at around 33 Mbps… :D A very nice MPEG-2 decoder indeed, although its recently added DXVA support needs a bit of work.

    Cheers.
