The answer to both should be yes. But USB 1 will be s-l-o-w... Best to buy a new card - USB 2 or best, firewire.

The Belkin range of cards seems to be pretty good, with good support, although there are many others. Staples, PC World etc have them on the shelf and should be able to help. Best of luck.

I bought a firewire card with lead and shipping via ebay for £10 came from Hong Kong in under a week so worth checking. I would reccomend going for a combi firewire USB2 card you never know when the other will come in handy. Also have connected mine via firewire on XP before (and after) I installed SP2.

Thanks for everyone's helpful advice. Looks like I'll be getting one since there shouldnt be anyprobs using it on my 'ancient' lap top...hehe.
sorry I'm not very it literate, could some one tell me what sp2 is and where i can get it? Correct me if I am wrong but I only need the sp2 software if I intend to use firewire right?

petecowie, the place you got the card from hong kong, is there website or contact detail if you dont mind me asking? sounds like a good buy.

    cheers.

Just a word of note. Apple specifies:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60971

that an iPod needs USB2 or FireWire. Can't say for definite about Windows, but an iPod won't work on a Mac with only USB1 (actually, it's iTunes that won't allow the iPod to work - other music playing apps like Audion *do* allow the iPod to work with USB1). iTunes on Windows may be different...

Apple also has a list of known working USB2 and FireWire cards here:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93405

Other cards may work of course, but you may not feel like taking the risk. Keep us posted.
