Wii to RGB to Progressive Display

Hi

My DVD recorder supports progressive scan, in the past I can connect my consoles (using RGB) to my DVD recorder and view the result in Progressive.

Am I gaining much here? Would it be much better if I just brought a proper component cable to go straight from the Wii?

Thanks

Ugh, I don't think you understand my question, my TV is progressive and my DVD recorder is outputing progressive, however the Wii is connected to the DVD via RGB but I'm still seeing it over a progressive signal, what I want to know is if this is as good as directly connecting to the Wii to the TV.

Dude bear with me here. you didnt mention about your TV in your first post thats why i asked.

You wont get true progressive using the RGB lead. As far as im aware you can only get progressvie using the component lead for your Wii.

But that's where the confusion comes in, I AM getting a progressive signal because my DVD recorder outputs a progressive signal, however, it's source is RGB from the Wii.

What I want to know is how this compares.

Where did you manage to get a Wii RGB Scart Cable from?

Game, but I got ripped for £23.

Better than the £50 that someone wants on eBay.

Also, I dont know why your TV is saying it is getting a progressive signal because you cant get progressive scan out of the Wii without component.

Because my DVD outputs progressive, regardless of the input.

Read the OP, it explains it all there.

As far as I understand the situation its as follows.

OPs setup.

Wii + RGB cable connected to the input of a DVD player.

DVD player is capable of outputting a progressive scan picture, and is connected in this fashion to a TV capable of displaying a 480p picture.

Question - is this any better than just connecting the Wii direct to TV via RGB?

I am not certain but I would say the answer is no - the picture from the Wii is not 480p. I know some AV kit upscales some inputs into better quality e.g. Standard definition DVDs look better on some High Definition players - but I'd doubt the DVD player does this.

Simple way to test though.

Change the setting in the Wii to 480p and back to normal and see if you think it makes a difference.

The Wii knows whether or not you have a Component cable plugged in, so it won't allow me to enable it.

In which case the answer to second part of the initial question is yes you would be better buying a specific component cable for the Wii if you have the screen capable of showing it - IMO the difference is very noticable.

If your DVD is high-end kit, then you might be benefiting from putting the Wii through it, but it will be marginal as best.

Maybe I am missing something, but if your TV is a progressive panel...What gain do you think you are getting by letting your DVD deinterlace instead of your TV!?

My Sony DVD Recorder does deinterlace all its inputs as well, but the deinterlacer in my Pioneer PDP-435 is much superior....

It all just depends on how good your current toys are....

The way i see it is that - you can only enable 480 P when you have a component cable so untill then i dont think your gonna get the best out of your wii no matter how good your dvd player takes that rgb signal and outputs it to your tv in progressive.

I have bought a component board for my plasma screen only for the Wii as thats the only way of getting true progressive.

I don't know what you're getting but it's definitely not progressive output from the Wii. There is absolutely no way for it to output a progressive signal using a scart cable as there is not enough bandwith. I suspect even though it seems like your DVD player outputting it as a progressive signal in reality it's probably an interlaced standard definition signal. If an RGB scart cable was able to output a progressive signal there would be no use or need for component connections and cables.

The guy is right...My Sony DVD Recorder converts RGB inputs to progressive scan signals as well....This is a plain normal process for many DVD recorders, and is the same what Plasma/LCD screens do.....

That's exactly the answer I was looking for, thanks.
