Wii Online?

Will Wii be Broadband enabled? I assume it is as we will be able to get games downloaded. Anyone got a link to some details?

Also, if it is BB enabled - will we at last see a real 8 player, online version of Mario Kart online - are there any rumours (if not I'll start one:devil: )...

for me this would be gaming heaven. Especially if they could get a decent way to chat, add friends and earn stats - like on 360 LIVE with some games.

I love the DS MK over wifi, but not that many have wifi and there is no chat or decent way to set games up really....play beautifully though...

The wii has built in wi-fi and an ethernet port for accesing the internet.

It will work in a similar way to how the ds works. Also it will be used to download old games from older nintendo consoles and the sega mega drive this is to be called the virtual console.

mmm - I was hoping for something like LIVE on the 360 which seems to be excellent.

DS would work so much better with a better friends system, as that is really the weak point imho, and a chat mechanism.

I see the Wii as being a more traditional 4-people-round-a-TV kind of thing - exactly the reason I want one :D

And the Mrs really wants one, quids in really!

There will be an ethernet port adapter but you have to buy a USB LAN adapter and connect it to one of the USB ports,

I think most of us share that dream, I'm sure if Nintendo are able they'll surely have those plans in the pipeline, that alone would sell the Wii to the so far unconverted(if there are any;) )

I also loved MK online on the DS, but it would've been 100% better with voice comms and a proper pre-post game lobby.

Basically it is going to be very similar to DS online - what a shame.

not quite true, Nintendo have stated that they are looking in to implimenting the idea of 1 friend code for each machine/person rather than 1 per game.... this may also be rolled over to the DS (obviously everyone would have to get a new friend code, but then it would be the same for each of their games).
I think this is a very good idea to be honest. Even though on the DS you would still input your mates code in to each game individually, it is still much much easier.

Lets hope they do do it. With the Wii its just bound to be like this, Nintendo have a patent for a chat program and so not haver 1 universal friend-code would really bugger up any plans for that.

well I hope they sort it, though it would seem rather close to launch to not have a clear plan as to how they will implemenmt this, unless it is being kept very quiet.

The Friend code thing on DS really does not work very well unfortunately and will result in games having very few playing online after the game has been out for a while.

I had decided to get a Wii, but the decision now hinges on how BB is implemented......

TBH, i dont want anything like LIVE, there is the 360 for that.

I never use headphones on LIVE, personal preference really, as i cant stand listening to 12 year olds screaming constantly. When its anonymous, everyones happy, but they definetly could improve the friends code architecture.

Everyone is not happy when it is annonymous. Everyone is happy when there is choice.

That's like saying the PC has internet access - so why bother on the 360?

You can simpley ignore or turn off chat. You don't need to use headphones.
But the point is you can and many love it. Live has had rave reviews and is the best thing about the 360. It would be great to have the option to chat to a group/lobby of your friends on a Wii, would it not? Also to be notified when friends are online and stuff and invite them to games.

The friend system is poor and even with the improvement of having only one code per machine it will still be a weak point.

I have a PC and a 360, but would like a Wii with good online elements as I usually prefer the Nintendo type games.

8 player Mario Kart online with friends and chat, maybe leagues, tournies and match making etc around the country would be great, but I think it looks like it will never happen.

why will having a universal friend code still be bad? it would just be like a gamerid on live. ALl the other features for chatting and stuff can be implimented whenever they want.
I agree though that choice is good. Friends codes keep things fairly anonnymous and then you have to specifically add someone who has given you their code... they can keep things fairly safe for the kids this way by not allowing chat between those that are not on eachothers lists.

I never use the headset on Live either - of course this might be because I don't actually have any friends so end up listening to annoying american teenagers. Having said that, since I got the DS I haven't even turned the 360 on!

I suspect the online multiplayer for the Wii may be abit of an aftertought, and not as comprehensive as Live, but as someone mentioned above I expect the in-the-room multiplayer to be the best of any console.

Abso-bloody-lutely.

Have had Nintendo consoles since the SNES and for in-room multiplayer nobody has ever come close to Nintendo. (there are great games on other machines - I have owned pretty much every console since the SNES).

To be able to play MarioKart (to be honest this is THE game to play multiplayer) over BB would be superb.

However it has to follow something similar to the fantastic 360 Live experience.

Ok - sometimes I also don't use the headphones etc on live, but the ability to 'lock off a game' to friends only so that you can chat away, have a laugh, give out abuse - in other words as if you are sat on the same sofa as each other is brilliant.

To do a half-arsed online version would be a crying shame for a console with so much potential.

Personally ill stick to my 360 for online play and the Wii for 4 player (Mates round action) and the retro game side.

I'm hopefully getting a Wii but if the online is like the DS then I may have to think very hard about it. I don't want to be unable to talk to people in game or before/after just because I can't convince any ofmy friends to buy a Wii. The perfect situation would pretty much be if the Wii online service WAS X-box livebut thas not going to happen so I guess the best we can do is hope. *sigh*
