Totally misleading headline that I'm disapointed you also choose to use.

Its just another converting app to some type of flash format. Theres plenty of them out.

Waste of time.

Agreed, it's not what I was thinking either!!!

But this bit

There are existing console modification kits that allow the Wii to play back DVD movies

How does this work then? I'm not interested in modding/chipping my Wii in any way but does it mean it's capable of DVD playback with a software update as we've all speculated?

Never worth the risk if you ask me.

We can't really recommend using the DVD player, as you'll need to have a modchip installed, voiding your warranty. If that doesn't sound like a big deal to you, consider this: Modchip manufacturer Wiinja has warned its customers that using the application could "cause the [Wii's] lens to deteriorate quickly over time."

So the Wii is capable of DVD playback... but not supposed to?

Cheers for the replies but I'm more confused than before!

I assume it's a disclaimer that basically says "Nintendo know how to make it work correctly and we probably don't."

Bring back Beta!

Making it capable of playing DVD's would have meant Nintendo would have had to pay licensing fees incrementing the price of the console. For the price of DVD players these days and the fact that we're on an AV forum I find it hard to believe people are that fussed about making their Wii play DVD's.

Looks like we might soon be able to play movies on the Wii, TBH one of my bug bears is that it doesn't play my DVD's as I would love to be able to move my dvd/divx player to another room in the house!

Or just buy a DivX player for £22.

You'll also get digital 5.1 out - rather than the stereo you'd get from the Wii
