Did anyone see "Wife Swap" on channel 4 tonight?

That hideous family of slobs! The wife reminded me of my ex!

Surely people cant live like that.

saw the ad and steered well clear.

saw a dire ITV programme a few weeks back called something like Red Mist 3 (yes it sounds like a straight to video gem) and it featured some fly on the wall footage of a family in Essex who were always arguing and I couldn't believe social services hadn't stepped in already... the wife and husbands turned really nasty on all of their kids (one was barely older than a toddler) and screamed obscenities at them. I felt like giving the parents a damn good kicking... like you I couldn't believe people lived like that.

    see we agree sometimes:D

    It's fairly logical really.

Anyone who would want to swap his wife, must have a real minger in the first place. That's the whole reason for the swap ain't it :D

In all the swingers docu type things I've seen on Ch4 and what have you, not a single one has been decent looking.

    I rest my case :D

Thought it almost amusing but scented too much contrived " let's state what I wouldn't like, then Oh My God, that's what I've been given " match making. Have to watch next week anyway.
I missed the end of Right Car, Wrong Car as my recording device swapped channels for Wife Swap.
What did Doctor Babe choose, Honda Insight or Peugeot 206 HDi, anyone know ?

Can't believe the black bloke smoked grass in front of his kids. Idiot.

The fat bloke and black woman seemed like quite normal people.

The same as drinking alcohol in front of your kids or smoking cigarettes.

Will try not to let this devolve into a drugs debate :p

It was basically an anthropological study (posh phrase for "reality TV") with a deliberately provocative title to draw-in the sexually curious.

Anthropological studies typically require the investigator to become totally immersed in the activity. I never saw the documentary - are you saying he swapped his wife too?

OK people do what they will, but that bloke must know that weed is still illegel regardless of how unlikely he is to be done. I agree its wrong in front of the kids when they are young but then i think that is the same as ciggerettes. My missus is a chronic asthmatic because her parents both smoked and still do. I smoke but do intend to stop before even think about kids. It's my choice to smoke not theirs and i am not going to push that crap (passivley) down their undeveloped lungs.

Mmmm as an asthmatic myself I am surprised to see you think smoking causes asthma. Smoking agrevates it, not cause it.

And you also smoke, what about your wifes lungs?

    WifeSwap was hilarious

I saw a bit of wife swap it was quite amusing, think I turned over to watch cribs instead on MTV.

The fat lady was useless, I would have shouted at her as well. NOTE: Not being chauvanist as my chores involve doing the laundry, washing up, cleaning bathroom, weekly shopping, mopping floors etc etc.

Fortunately, I gave up smoking, so hopefully no need to worry about kids seeing me. I would smoke outside anyway.

    Squirrel God,

Anthropological study = a study of mankind, especially its societies and customs. This requires observation, not participation.

Oxford English Dictionary perhaps? :p *

Back on topic, the programme was highly contrived. Fat white woman and black man are the (more racist) partners of the two couples. The other partners get on genuinely well and learn something from the process, whilst the others dig in for a dogmatic clash of beliefs and values.

    Only mildly entertaining

    bh,

Correct, I thought I'd better just get my facts straight so confirmed the definintion in the OED.

Also getting back on topic, of the four participants, only one of them (the white lady) seemed to have a job. Sorry, I can't remember the names. It wasn't really explained how the family where no one worked derived their income. They seemed to be able to afford to spend £50 a week on weed. I only hope it wasn't being paid for out of social security benefits.

I also thought it very unfair that the white lady was expected to continue her full-time job which required her to leave the house at 7:15am and not get back home 'till 7:00pm and yet still be expected to do all the house-work that the unemployed wife did.

Except that you added on this bit:

Observation without participation in any anthropological research method is ineffective and would equate the discipline more to sociology. Without immersing oneself in the society one wishes to observe, one is unable to effectively understand culture, merely scratch the surface (which is what sociology does and one reason why it has been so ridiculed as a discipline even since its conception). Observation alone influences those being observed and thus changes what is being observed, often quite fundamentally. This is even more relevant when considering culture, customs and societies, and is the reason why most anthropological researchers spend years living within, and becoming part of, a community when conducting their research.

Correct SG, participant observation has generally tended to be the tool of choice for ethnographers, particularly since Park's Chicago School paradigm shift in the 1930s.

But you knew that didn't you. ;)

I thought Wife Swap was a right laugh!

The fat bloke reminded me of Homer and the way the whole show turned out with the swaps reminded me of something like the Simpsons meet South Park :D

Heisenberg has shown that in quantum physics, by studing anything, you change the studied party (which also plays true an macroscopic scales too i.e. societies, cultures, everything) so anthropologists realised that they migth as well get stuck in because by merely studying in a classic scientific, disbodied manner (whch is a scientific dream any way), you change the observed party so as to make the study inccorect anyway.
