Anybody have any idea if BBC or ITV will be broadcasting their games in widescreen. Just watched the England-Korea game highlights and that game wasn't.

I wouldn't put money on them being widescreen.

It would require the cameras there to be widescreen cameras and the transmission equipment all set up for anamorphic widescreen broadcasts and relaying.

I understand that widescreen programming is not common in that part of the world.

I started a thread on this same subject a few weeks back and the consensus was that it would NOT be in widescreen. However, I watched the game live on SKY yesterday and it WAS in widescreen! I am surprised that the BBCs version was not!

Would like to think that in this day and age that it would be in widescreen. I know that BBC/ITV show games in w/s here in the UK but are at the mercy of the broadcaters in Japan/Korea. I would be surprised that a technically advanced country like Japan does not offer widescreen. In France 98 the TV stations were given the option of taking a widescreen feed or a 4:3 feed by the host broadcaster. I guess we'll wait and see. As long as its on the box I will be happy.

As I mentioned, this topic was discussed before and Bh had some good info...

...However , the company that will film the matches, Host Broadcast Services (HBS), on behalf of FIFA would appear to be supplying a 4:3 feed with no mention of 16:9 on their website:

"In addition to the Standard Definition 4/3 feeds provided by HBS, a separate high definition 1080i (interlaced digital) clean feed is available for Broadcast Partners.

The high definition multilateral feeds are a co-production implemented by two groups of local broadcasters (the Korea Pool and the Japan Consortium), supported by the Local Organising Committees, KirchMedia and HBS. 48 matches are being produced live, including all the matches from the Second Phase. Most other matches have highlights coverage."

Check out the VERY technical reply by mromega

What's more worrying is the picture quality, if the
England v S Korea friendly the other night is anything to go by.
Looked like an old 80s satellite broadcast.

    And what about that crowd!
    Sounded like a Boyzone concert!

So, the high definiation feed will be widescreen as that is part of the HD spec, there is also mention of a downcoverted PAL widescreen feed.

However, the BBC have chosen not to have that. I wonder if that is because there is no 14:9 or 4:3 protected frame?
