Ok before I start please note two things:

    A) Im not sure if this is the right place to ask this.
    B) I know everyone hates 4:3 but me.

I have a small insignificant question you may think, but for me its very annoying.

It happens when my dvd is set at any of the three options (4:3, 4:3 P&S, 16:9). Ive noticed it on both Men in Black 2 and The Scorpion King. Whilst watching on either of my 4:3 tvs both of these films from time to time resize the screen area to more black line and less picture and then flicks back.

Can someone please advise me of what this is and why it happens? Also I would rather not just have answers like yeah 4:3 sucks (as it happens to be a format I prefer). The only reason I am asking as Im unsure if this if built into either machines or dvds to make consumers move onto 16:9. As surely I would have thought the only problem with watching 16:9 on a 4:3 tv would be the sides cut off etc.

I hope someone can help me with this rather annoying glitch.

Thanks in advance to those who may provide me with the answer.

I used to get this on some region 1 dvds (rocky horror, moulin rouge) on my old 4:3 tv before upgrading to widescreen. I suspect it was the player that was to blame a cheap bush 2002 (now replaced by a more expensive philips)

i always thought it was to do with the way the player was converting the ntsc signal to pal. it was always at the same point on the dvd so must have had something to do woith the way the disc was encoded. but now that i've upgraded, no more problems.

is it always in the same point of the film? could it be when it swaps layers on the disc it temporarily redjusts the image?

Wow thanks for all the interest/replys so far.

They are both R1 versions of the films.

One dvd player is an old Samsung 709 (with code and mod chip).
Other dvd player is a new cheap Bush 2020xi (which play everything right out the box).

One tv is a Matsui 28 inch 4:3 and the other tv is a 43 inch Toshiba Toshiba 43 VJ13P.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ripco.

i have the same problem with those 2 films using a 28inch widescreen jvc tv and a jvc dvd player, scorpion king is the worst does it approx 15 - 20 times during the film, men and black does it about four times and i have the same problem with spiderman doing it a couple of times all are region1. the tv is a 28inch widescreen and it goes from small bordered top and bottom flicks to full screen, then reverts to bordered, yet if i watch through ps2 or xbox then they work fine, work fine on my dvd portable combi too :(

the thing they have in common are there all anamorphic, so i reckon my dvd player is trying to be to clever by half, hopefully they will be fine on my new toshiba tv and dvd player im getting

is everyone watching raw ntsc pictures or is their player converting the signal to pal60 as this may also be a factor. bottom line though i think the player is to blame as i've not had any problems since upgrading.

I will try tinkering with the ntsc. Can I still play my pal dvds etc when switched to ntsc signal?
