    Hi All,

I have a 42" plasma and as you know the current res from the TV signal is pretty naff, but when viewing the picture in 4:3 ratio the quality is not bad at all. So are the following assumptions correct?

When viewing a widescreen (16:9) broadcast from, say, Sky are they just broadcasting on 625 lines (50hz) with 'stretched' pixels to make the picture look correct.

When viewing a non-widescreen (4:3) broadcast on a widescreen TV set to 16:9 your TV is stretching the image and the picture will therefore look 'squashed'.

    Thanks

    Len

When sky or any other channel broadcast in widescreen, they are showing it in 16:9. If they have the actuall widescreen version then they do not need to stretch the picture.
If you watch a 4:3 broardcast and then use the wide mode on the plasma then you are stretching the image to fit the screen.

If you dont have a very good image when watching a 16:9 broadcast. Make sure that your sky digi box is set to RGB and 16:9 wide mode in the user setup menu. Also make sure that the didgi box is connected to a RGB enabled scart socket on the back of the plasma. :)

Both 4:3 and 16:9 pictures are broadcast in 720x576 pixels - the same resolution as PAL DVDs. We won't see true widescreen broadcasts until HD starts next year.
