Why you shouldn't update devices - a painful lesson

Over the weekend I was making a tweak to my Harmony One and it told me that there was an "Update" for one of my devices" - My Thompson Sky HD box.

So I clicked "Yes" and downloaded it. It popped a new device on my devices page called PVR

And it seems to have deleted all of my configurations for my original sky box. It has lost sequences, standard and additional button customisations (but NOT my favourites and Icons...)

Is there an "Undo" or a "restore settings back to Last Friday" option anywhere??

(Logi - if this should be in the Harmony thread please move it - I didn't want to weigh the thread down with my cock-up..)

You're OK here Ian - the specialised threads get a bit congested so it's good to have a bit more space around us!
Do you mean it gave you a new additional device or did it over-write the previous one - not both, surely?
How did you set it up originally - by manufacturer and model number, the same as mine, and as what classification?
The classification of PVR is correct of course, but the only practical advantage, and that's a matter of opinion, is the icon.

It gave me a new device called PVR, with a device type of Thomson DSI-8215. It was not in any activity

Edit: Yes, additional, apologies

I originally set it up this way (PVR/Thomson etc)

T

Worked for me so I won't knock it!

That's OK, but in that case the original device and activity setups shouldn't have been changed - so what's wrong with them?

My apologies - you said that from the start.
It really shouldn't have done that, so it vindicates my policy of never accepting updated devices - too late for you now though.:(

I take that as "I'm screwed" :suicide:

Thankfully I hadn't actually updated the One itself so I can at least note the button settings - and then try and remeber the sequences I had defined.

Oh well - back to the keyboard.

Did anyone ever find a good way to roll back changes? Some sort of backup is needed.

I have sometimes ended up with a corrupt config and the Harmony bricked. Then its a matter of trawling through with the software to undo any changes and find problems.

I have had my Harmony drop sequences too. I had to recreate some but not all the other day and on this occasion I do not know why. However, I do know of one cause for dropped devices and associated sequences. Maybe this is also related to your problem.

There are two ways to add a device to an Activity.
  • While editing an Activity add a device.
  • While in device mode select which Activities need the device. Note, not all devices present a list of activities to select and deselect  I have not bothered to understand why its there for some and not for others. However, this second method seems to produce less stable results, so best avoided IMHO.
Out of curiosity I have accepted an updated device in the past. It just created a new one but left everything else in place. No special problems were encountered.

Ian - That's lucky you didn't take the next step and Update the remote, but it's still weird that the Activity got messed up - I'd report it to Logitech support.
m_m - How do you do that second option?
broadsword - Thanks for that confirmation that I'm not the only one to reject offers of updates - if it's not broken don't fix it.

The second method turned up when I added my x10 IR7243 transceiver. Perhaps it has always been there but I hadn't noticed it before , also I think its not always shown on every device (?) but when it was available there was an option in the device menu to select which Activities used the device. I could then use tick boxes to select, en masse, which Activities I wanted to add it to (?? its been a while since I tried and I am not home now to verify the details but I can do so later if you want me to??).

This selection process then added the device to my selected Activities and I could setup buttons and sequences. It would be quite a time saving feature when you need to add a device to many Activities. However, I found that some Activities lost the device occasionally after subsequent updates. On investigation I found those Activities that did not loose the device where the same ones were I had used method 1 and the ones that lost the device were set up with method 2. There's some posts by me elsewhere I think.

Is your old device still present? Does it have this method 2 way of adding it to devices or is it just the new one?

When loosing devices and sequencies associated with it I found just adding the device back into the Activity was enough to recover the missing sequences and they could be mapped to the buttons once more without having to recreate a sequence from scratch.

Knowing that may save someone some anxious moments and not to panic too soon :) Quirks and irritations of getting to know the H1 too well :D

Doing this one step at a time...

Yes My "SkyHD" device and "PVR" are both there. The SkyHD is still in the "watch Sky" activity. The SkyHD dveice does not have an "Add this device to an Activity" option on the settings page. (First item in the list) - the PVR does.

If I select this it seem to take me into the create an activity "Wizard".

I'll try the next step. "I may be some time...." ;)

So it has now created an New "Watch TV" activity around my "PVR" (New DSI-8215 IYSWIM) and the "Add this device to an Activity" option has disappeared from the device settings page.

Sadly the sequences and button settings have not reappeared :-(

Me thinks it is time to consign the new device to the great bit bucket in the ethernet and to remember this lesson for a long long time.

Y O Y O Y isn't there a "backup/restore" facility (or at least a "print configuration" facility) ??

OK - There's something of a learning curve going on around here! That Devices to Activities option is new to me.
Ian - Did you try m_m's experience "When loosing devices and sequencies associated with it I found just adding the device back into the Activity was enough to recover the missing sequences"? It's very odd for the Activity to be changed at all, but that sounds like a way to put it right.

No I didn't and sadly it is too late - I have started to rebuild the Activity. (And much as I would love to learn more I am not keen to start all over again)

The weird thing is, it is ONLY the SkyHD device codes that disappeared, the buttons I had programmed for TV and AVR codes where still there in place..com

OK - then it looks like you'll know better next time, and the thread will be a warning to others - you might like to change the header to point to it.

Just checked out my 7 devices and only one has a radio button with 'Select the Activities that use this device.' This takes me to a list of Activities each with a box to tick or untick.

Its odd that its only my x10 IR7243 that has this option.

Logiciel have you any ideas why its there for some devices and not for others ? .... not that its that important because I do not use this way of setting up activities any more.

From what you say it isn't the same as the one I had, which did take me into the "Build an Activity" wizard - or whatever it is called. It is the only device I have that is not in any activity and interestingly the "Add to Activity" option hasn't reappeared now I have deleted the one activity it was in!

Welcome to the quirky Logitech software way of doing things. You will get there in the end but the road may have a few hidden turns along the way. :)

And (I hope) finally - what's the trick for learning double key strokes?

I lost the "learnt" key for double pressing "select" on the sky remote (needed to get to ITV HD with a soft button). I must have struck lucky last time but I cannot repeat the trick.

I get through to the "Learn command" option, create my own command (at the bottom of the page and it even gives me the "Key Press Detected " message during the learn - but it refuses to respond as though it has learned a double press.

How long should I press a key for? And how long should I wait between presses? Should I be quick or slow ?(Ooo err missus... )

Thanks m_m - you got me checking too! Same result - one device produces that message. It's stupid because it actually means "select activities that WILL use this device", not, as it says, those that use it now, which would be a total waste of space. Of course, it's not the first instance of something Logitech says meaning something quite different.
It's the first time I've come across it though, and therefore I don't know why it's there at all. I guess it's to remind you that the device is sitting there doing nothing, but it's an odd - "quirky Logitech software way of doing things" - way of giving the reminder.
