It's because Region 3 is a poorer market.
Items like Dvds are not priced on their "worth" but on their perceived value
and the ability of their audience to pay for them.

VHS tapes cost 3x as much as Dvds to manufacture but are priced lower.
PS It costs about 15p to manufacture a Dvd, printing artwork and packaging adds another 20p

I was thinking of buying the R3 version of Shrek2 and I wondered why it was cheaper. I guess we always look for the catch. I think I might be going to cdwow after all.

as an example, i picked up hellboy r3 in singapore for £11, that was full price in HMV. I imagine the wholesale price is significantly lower (prob around half). Incidentally, it's hard to find legit DVDs in malaysia (KL was where i looked, i only found one outlet, and 90% of it's stock was chinese and japanese films). Most movies are released on VCD.

I was abit wary of buying Region 3 titles at first after I had got a number of DVD9 bootlegs which were ment to be original R3 titles but I have to admit, the Region 3 versions that CDWow stock are always worth a look before you go and buy a R1 or R2 DVD. Most of the time they are identical or near enough identical to either the US or UK release (e.g. Hellboy/The Day After Tomorrow) and are £4 or £5 cheaper

I have a few R3 DVDS (Hellboy ROTK etc) only once or twice have I been disappointed like with the recent R3 of "Hero" - the film is good quality widescreen DTS-ES etc but the second disc of "extras" is all in Chinese with no English subtitles so pretty useless to us non polylinguists (is there such a word!)
    I have Shrek 2 on order on R3 btw ... Paul ;)

The main reason: market. Asian consumers are not willing (nor able) to afford high prices as in e.g. the US or Europe and pirated VCDs/DVDs, which often cost only a fraction of a legal one, do not really encourage buyers to pay the higher price. Quality is not a concern here, not for DVDs and not for other things I might add. What counts is price, a low one that is.
So the only way to sell at least some discs is by offering them cheap(er). Older releases sell here in Taiwan for TWD400, with new ones priced around 600-800 and music/concert DVDs around the 800-1200 mark.

It should be noted that the releases from the major labels appear to be close to R1 releases but sometimes they contain Asian language tracks and nearly always Asian subtitles, the former often at the cost of a DTS soundtrack (where applicable). I think some are even censored on occassion.

The picture quality seems however mostly identical with the R1 releases.

Nearly all region 3 releases I have purchased contain DTS soundtracks when their R1 or R2 rivals do not, e.g Black Hawk Down, Terminator 3, Underworld. The only differences I have noticed is that the Menus are simplified, but that dosnt bother me :D

Also the currencies in Asia have fallen by 20-30% v the £ over the last year.

I bought Goodfellas SE/Day After Tomorrow and Troy for £28 in Hong Kong 2 weeks ago

I think that the main reason that R3s are cheaper is that obviously if the discs are pressed in Korea then the factory they are made in probably costs a fraction to run compared to the plants in europe and the usa. The average wage for a factory worker in korea would be tiny compared to that of the west. Its all about scales of economy.
